There have been a couple of threads recently asking about frugal cars so lets celebrate them. I'm not looking to buy one I just think they are fun this is to celebrate eco cars from their own eras so the cost to buy one now is irrelevant all that matters here was the new cost and relatively good fuel economy for a car of its era. I'm sorry but you can't have an economy car thread without a Mini after all it was pretty much the design breif. Tiny 2 cylinder car that was inexpensive to buy. Eco car I think so Fiat 500 Frugal spacious and once again designed for those on a budget Citroen 2CV Go on what you got then?

Mini, 500, 2CV - all too expensive to buy... Silly prices! I'm glad I bought my Mini almost 10 years ago when they were cheap

No photos to share, sorry (on my phone). Just had to say, that orange Renault 5 looks absolutely gorgeous. Owned 2 standard mk1's years ago and they were fun little cars, despite the horrendous body roll. I'm sure a gordini would handle better though

For that reason I have not included DAFs in here as although they are dirt cheap now they were quite expensive in their class when they were new.

Biased, but one of the best small cars around, plus the engines are excellent, often getting 55 to 60 mpg, factor in the group one insurance, and the low cost to buy when new, and you have one very cheap little car

My newly acquired Kia Pride ticks most of the boxes. It's an old car (regardless of its year of manufacture ), incredibly cheap both new and in current secondhand market, and I achieve 50mpg* from my 1.3 *I recently completed a speed awareness course, and my commute is long with 90% A roads and motorway, so my driving style is pretty relaxed

Affordable now and when introduced (THIRTY YEARS ago next year), hard as nails, don't rot, don't fall apart and 50mpg is the norm for diesels/easily attainable in an 1100 petrol, too. Plus the oil-burning versions have what's unquestionably the finest small diesel engine ever made. ;D

The original economy car: The Model T wasn't actually that bad on fuel either, supposedly they did 25mpg (US), which I believe is actually better than the current US vehicle fleet average. And of course there's the quintessential British economy car: Supposedly the Austin 7 could achieve 40-50mpg, which is still good even by today's standards. It's hard to go wrong with an ultra-light car and a small engine. Also, let's not forget that versions of the Austin 7 were responsible for kick-starting car production by both BMW and Nissan/Datsun.
