I've recently got hold of an uprated weber carb from a hilman imp, a larger inlet manifold, gt camshaft, gt exhaust system and an aluminium strut brace. When asked why there was a growing pile of 'car bits' in the garage by my mother, I tell her "I'ts to help my car get through the winter. It's playing up and I'm worried its not going to run when it gets cold"
I'm a good lier
What excuses have other people used for filling the garage space or spending a fortune?

The mrs is fine with it all, unless there are more than three engines laying about at any one time, then she starts snooping.
She doesn't like not being able to get in the shed neither, i have to ensure the lawnmower is on top of heavy things like axles, wheels etc.

like the delivery to work thing posted quite a bit of c/o works adresses come to think of it have had stuff delivered to mates before now if other half is enthusiastic your 99 % home if not its dodgy delivery mode then proudly fit and in my case often goes unnoticed except for exhausts maybe

I don't need any excuses anymore, people who know me expect it of me, doesnt even surprise them when I say I've got half a car in my attic.... like these are some of the new panels for my Triumph Herald that are up there there are a couple of interiors for it up there too.

I'm guessing as long as your buying car bits and spending your time under your car the good lady is happy, least your not doing naughty things elsewhere

I go with the - "but there's no more parts in the spare room than before - I sold (something) before I bought this..." or "I swapped a larger part for this one so I'm saving space and spent no money...." (except I don't actually sell or swap the parts.... they live in the boot of the car for a couple of weeks til she's forgotten and then I bring them back into the flat)

"It was a present from a friend" works well.
When I bought the 2nd DAF I hid it 300 miles away and told SWMBO that I only owned a fifth of it. She was not pleased when she found out it was all mine and then I had to pay recovery fees to bring it home again. Moral of the story just tell her and hide for a few hours ;D
