I was working at a Rover dealers when the Maestro Turbo was launched. First one we had was our demonstrator and the keys were duly handed to the sales manager to take home for the weekend. He drove it home (Blackbird Leys ), parked it in his garage, locked it, set the alarm and locked the garage doors. Never saw it again..... Not even on the news? ;D

the main faults are rust, electric gremlins, rust and that a 10 year old with a screwdriver can have one away in 20 secs, and rust. so finding one is not easy

Used to have a 1.6L Maestro at "work" which was a brownish colour. Had 2 tones and magnetic blue light. Loved it to bits and even outran a Golf GTi one night much to his surprise when the `cuffs went on. Always had a hankering for the metallic green MG version.

Recovered with burnt out valve on main road with doors all open. Police reckoned it was taken by somebody who just wanted a ride home from pub so I was lucky. Locks and column shroud damaged but contents, including some very expensive land surveying equipement in the boot, not touched. Easy repair - still have the valve seat cutters bought to do the job (A Series 1275 version).

Last month, so it is... I had a white mk2 mg metro, my dad had the turbo version and my pal had a white one as well but he had burst the hydrogas so it ripped cats eyes out the road. I smashed mine to bits trying to wire in a sterio whilst driving in rush hour, my dads was a ringer and my pal put AV gas in he's for a laugh and boomeranged the crank somehow. All in all, pretty indestructible but the rot will eat them. Luckily BL designed the seats so they hold the floor up via the crossmember. Would I buy one again? Hell yeah!!!

My old one. Went like a rocket, twice I think. The rest of the time it overfuled so much and I could never quite get it sorted. It was as rust free as it looks. Shame I couldnt get its problems sorted as it was a great car to drive.

Owned loads of Metros including one black Mk2 MG which was probably the crustiest example of a dodgy MOT holder I've ever owned. Sold it before I had to test it again which was a pity as it was a hoot to drive.
Every other one was stolen and smashed to bits by scroates.
Still own a Metro in part as the Midas is based on Metro sub frames.

Not even on the news? ;D Are you thinking of the one that pulled a handbrake turn and sped past the cameras with teh front wheels smoking? That one belonged to my brothers Ex's dad. It was his company car at the time (worked at Cowley), he parked it up on the drive when he got home from work, they had tea and sat down to watch the news when the report came up. "that looks just like my car.............................. that is my car!"

There was a maestro which was the fastest FWD car in the uk for quite a while. Apart from rust and the usual gremlins they can be a laugh. They aren't to bad too find as minters as loads are still used as shopping cars by the retired

Is it just me or is the MG Maestro far nicer looking than the Turbo kitted version?
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the 80's and early 90's excess of OEM big bodykits, but the lines and proportions of the low fat MG just seem to work a lot better. I'd have one happily....

Oh...and I'd love to see these wheels re-made in 15 or 16" flavour. With a nice offset and some dish.

The montego was a good car, especially the MG.
I would consider an early turbo (B/C)reg. I bet there are hardly any left.
Rust, electrical gremlins, wheel bearings were most obvious weaknesses.
