My dads just bought a Subaru Impreza STi Spec-D today, which is a STi in sheeps clothing basically, and it looks like a standard WRX without any badging etc.
I was thinking about what the retro version of the car might be. There have been plenty of the opposite (think escort mexico), but I can't think of many cars that have been 'sleepers' from the factory.
The RS2000 Escort had all the stickers, but did ford make a non-stickered version?
What other cars have been similar, a subtle version of the fast car?

I've always considered the mk3 Cavalier V6 GLS a awesome sleeper.
Base model bumpers and interior, steels and hub caps with a 200bhp engine.

I can think of one but it is cheating in a way, the Daihatsu Mira X2/X4 (there was an older generation one in the late 80s/early 90s but I couldn't get any decent pics sorry!) The performance of one of these: With the appearance of this (but with bonnet vent for the intercooler): Only available in white with steel wheels. Why is it cheating exactly? Because it was designed to be used as a track/rally car! Another good example in the same vein is the original (early 90s) Subaru Impreza Type-RA, which was much the same, only available in white, no spoiler, no radio or interior comforts etc. These were for works teams to make into rally cars basically, but a lot just hit the road as is:

In 1968 Baldwin-Motion (Chevrolet dealer in Long Island, NY)made these: The Biscayne Street Racer Special..They took a standard Biscayne stripped it of all unneccessary bits and dumped an L72 427ci big-block in it, chucking out anything from 500-600bhp depending on where you read. Got to be the ultimate sleeper....imagine walking into your local dealer and walking out with one of these monsters. ;D

1965 SS-396 Chevelle Z16 They only built 200,and they were never in a brochure. It seemed they were on a need to know basis, for drag racers! 385 BHP in a lightened shell. Not bad for 41 years ago ;D

granny cossie is a recentish one, you mentioned mexicos, you could order them without stripes and with steel whels, so would only have been the front quarter bumpers that gave em away to the casual observer.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

These are great, owned 3 now. Looks to all intents and purposes to layman a BX TZD turbo diesel, same bodykit, spoiler etc. But 170hp as standard 0-60 of 7 seconds from the factory and a powerband of 4400rpm through to 5500rpm. FWD rally car for the road ;D ;D

Mk1 Mex and RS2 had no stripes as a delete option i.e. you had to tell 'em not to put 'em on. The Mex with no stripes had badges on the wings that said Mexico instead of 1600 though.
A bloke I work with has a '98ish Mondeo that looks a lot like my '99 Mondeo. The only difference is that his is a V6 with 190ish BHP. It's even got steel wheels and wheeltrims (3 for effect in this case).

Rover 420 GSi Turbo? 200Bhp engine from the 220 Turbo coupe in a Daily Mail body. Magic. When I see that, I think.. Hey Look, a Subaru Legacy. Is there any inter-manufacturer-breeding relation there at all? Or just a matter of lack of imagination from both parties?
