Gents,
Just a quick ask, I'm looking to swap my engine for something Japanese. After hours of surfing, I'm looking at something from the rx7 or 200sx. I've seen 12a's and 13b-t in classics and I like the sound of the 12a bridgeported.
I've also looked at the ca18det, I know some would say go straight pass it to the sr20. But I don't mind the smaller less powerful brother. Easily available, and plenty around.
So I open this question up to the wider forum, your feedback would be greatly received.
Many Thanks

I'm slightly biased as you might guess.... But I shall try to present a balanced argument!
To an extent it depends what character of an engine you like. Rotaries are all about revs, so if you're someone who likes overtaking without downshifting forget the rotary! The turbo 4 pot would be much better for lazy drivability. When you start really thrashing it I personally think the rotary would give you more feed back and smiles than the 4 pot. You'll get more reward for driving it really hard and hitting every gear change just right.
If you are looking at a rotary then I suggest you look past the 12a. Mazda have stopped supporting it now and they are getting thinner on the ground. 13b parts are still available and they are plenty full. A 13b bridgey would go very nicely and the extra torque will help move the cortina better too.

Can I throw in another suggestion, what about a Mazda Mx5 engine, it looks a bit more retro and would fool the casual observer into thinking it was a lotus lump.

With such a range of Ford piston engines, i don't know why you wanna use a J one specifically if you don't know which one you wanna use..?
With the rotary, well that's a bit different!
Wouldn't be the first rotary Cortina, either.

Yeah but rotary Cortina. Given how lightweight a Tina is, it must be awesome... Do you have a build thread on your car, Max?

I haven't got a build thread ATM, hope to start it over the winter. I've looked at lots of different engines over the last few months. I guess I just wanted something abit different sitting in the car.

I'm assuming you want a turbo given that your looking at sr20 etc . You should have a look at some of the Saab conversions going into rwd cars using the b204/234 using either omega r28/r30 box or vauxhall xe rwd bellhousing to t5 ford box . Bang for buck its the cheapest power you can get and the stock motor will take 400 hp all day long . Some engineering involved mainly with the sump as the mk2 Tina had a steering box set up from memory
