OK not super 1000BHP sleeper, but neat. I love it. In fact I've seen this car at events a few times with its bonnet shut and never realised anything was "amiss". what's this... Interior is pretty stock too, just a modern looking gear knob to give away the 5 speed etc... Full event photos are HERE

Love it.
All the character (and nostalgia) of the original, using a modern and efficient, recently researched and newly developed, engine. Environmentally, and also industrially supportive mode of transport.
Not to mention the added practicality of using it on today's roads or the fun factor, this is right up my street and classic owners taking this route have my full support - just a shame the EU doesn't seem to want the same.

That's lovely. I don't think I'd have been able to resist slightly widened stock wheels for a "period tuned" sort of look.

Absolutely awesome. This is pretty much my idea of the perfect hot-rod. Also, just read the link and he says it's a Mk2 Escort 4-speed. And stock chassis/suspension/brakes! That would be exciting! The owner says he's not game to take it over 65mph, and I don't think I would be either on boot-polish tin drum brakes.

Awesome - as has been said, everything a sleeper should be. ;D Just a shame, IMO, that the rest of the running gear's not been improved to allow him to make best use of the engine (which is one of my favourite games ).

I love the idea of a modernized retro daily. As has been said, modern running gear to match the engine would be better. I'd go the whole hog and fit leccy windows, aircon, heated seats, the lot. Looks like the guy wanted it pretty much original with a modern, hassle-free engine.

Lets not get OT with this - motor manufacturers sell new cars for far more compelling reasons than the difficulties legal or otherwise of building an old car to modern car standards. Most if not all modernised old cars I have seen fall short of the standards for NVH and the like that moderns achieve. Wind noise for a start is almost impossible to get down to "acceptable" levels in cars without flush fit glass etc.
Fitting power everything would weigh it down and spoil the concept for me.
He's probably kept the original running gear to keep it out of IVA legally. People bleat about drum brakes but they are fine so long as you drive accordingly. I drive a 2 ton 6.8 litre 450lb torque 375 BHP V8 car on drum brakes and skinny (185r14 / 195r14) tyres.
I can't imagine that his drives much worse...

I'd love to geta bit more info on how he's hooked the 4 speed escort box onto the torque tube - or how he's converted the car to a propshaft? we looked at using a hybrid 103e / 100e setup for mine, but instead I think we'll end up using a relint box and somehow adapting that onto the original torque tube amazing build though - wonder if the brakes are hydraulic now
