I don't actually own a stereo. For the main living area at home I set up my Mum's old Onkyo hi-fi which she bought about 30 years ago. It did have a tape deck, but I stored that somewhere else, so now it just has the turntable, amp/radio and two speakers. I recently put in a new stylus cartridge for the turntable and we listen to vinyl LPs fairly often. Other than that, it's just radio or ipods/laptops. Here's a pic of the same model stereo, although ours lights up more yellow than orange: Audiophiles will hate me for saying this, but in my bedroom I just listen to my laptop through the built-in speakers. They are actually excellent speakers though, harman/kardon ones which are far superior to most laptop speakers.

Have to say, I do like my music but I'm also terrible at it! So I've built myself a nice hifi/home cinema over the past few years courtesy of evilbay and other second hand means such as police auctions. My main system consists of and Arcam AVR 300 cinema reciever connected to my ps3 and tv via optical cables and a coax to an old PC that I was given in uni if I could make it work. Then a wharfedale pacific evo centre speaker, and 2 dipole wharfedale rear speakers which I got 1 owner with the avr300 for £150. My front 2 channels are early 90s technics sbf-950s that were found in a shed in my uni house. The cabinets were delaminating but drivers are perfect, so I quick jig and some no more nails fixed them. Then I have a paradigm pdr8 sub from evilbay poorly advertised and 18 miles away for £9.99! I've also got an old pair of aiwa speakers with 8" woofers donated by a mate when the amp broke in his system, they look terrible but are great for parties! My second system is an old rotel ra931 some cheap Japanese cd player and a pair of kef cresta 2s that I picked up for £50 plus fees so £55 total at a police auction! I did also win a kenwood separated system for 99p on the bay of E some years ago which currently resides with a mate. It even came with the receipt for £1000 when new!

I'm quite particular about my stereo stuff, so separates all the way for me. Got a Marantz amp that's been going up to eleven for three decades now and is more than man enough for the ocassions it's called upon to pump out Rammstein loud enough to drown out the neighbour's God-bothering carol recitals on his piano (oh, yessss, not all noise pollution is what you'd think; between his stupid barking dog and his badly-played, out-of-tune piano massacres of Little Town of Bethlehem and Morning has Broken, you'd think it'd be enough to earn him an ASBO. The fact he's about eighty seems to weigh in his favour, sadly). I've got an old Goodmans CD player with low-bit sampling for proper music sound rather than sanitised digital tinny rattle like modern ones. And a Project turntable with the obligatory Ortofon stylus. Wharfedale cabs the size of furniture make sure there will be bass ;D One piece of "sound" advice I recieved about stereo equipment; the less controls the manufacturer trusts you with, the better the quality of sound. Ones that light up like Woolworths on Christmas week and have more knobs than a kitchen unit outlet are what you don't want. Oh, and more than with many other things in life, you get what you pay for. I got an MP3-covertor turntable for Christmas last year, it's great and even came with noise removal software and such. All I have to do is find time to wade through over 400 albums and convert them to 'puterised Should only take me... errr, as long as it takes to listen to 400 albums, I suppose.

Some more peoples HiFi here retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=othrmod&thread=125234&page=1I'm still amazed by the warmth and depth of tone from my old Marantz set up. HAving just shelled out for a new 3D plasma and blu ray it may seem a little odd to be using an old Bose Accoustimass 2.1 speaker system powered by an even older Marantz amp, but I can't see it being beaten for TV/Film playing duties

I do like my seperates too. Got a Marantz amp, Denon CD player, Denon DVD player. Speakers are KEF Q3 with a REL 250W rms sub for a bit of low (excellent for films etc if you turn it to slam rather than roll)

I like my Hi-Fi too, used to listen to music all the time as a kid, for a while I didnt have a TV in my room, only Hi-Fi! However now I'm older, it don't get listened to half as much as it should i've toyed with the idea of getting some of my money back, selling it all and getting a small Hi-Fi. But i can't bring my self to do it! Missus has always got the TV on. I have a Sony TA-FE230 amp with a Cambridge Audio CD player (about 12 months old). Also a cheap vinyl deck. Some cheap Acoustic Solution speakers as there is no room for my Tanoys or Whafedales. I also have a Cambs Audio A5 amp, but now that's linked to the Computer with some old "Realistic" speakers (Radio Shack specials). I would use it in the living room but it has no Phono Stage

Cool.
Used to be into the hi fi, but sort of lost touch with it. Still have mine. NAD CD player and Technics tape (yes a real 80's throwback!!!) player all linked to a Denon Amp through various make interconnects (trial and error to find the best sound) and B&W speakers with silver anneversery speaker cable.
Still listen to it and use it for sound when playing a DVD or Play station.

In my garage (Mrs doesn't want them in the house.... Not sure which one I prefer in the house at the minute, but I bet I've still got my hifi in 10 years..... lol) I've currently got an Arcam Alpha 2 amp, Denon TU260 MKii tuner, Marantz CD48 (I think) CD player, Technics tape deck and Wharfedale Pacific PI-10 speakers. Sounds bloody great!
