Ignore the knockers.....they provided good, basic transport for quite a lot of people before "brand identity" became the new way of spelling no brains snob. They were also easy to look after too. Def like that white one (EGS 307) at the top of the pics...that big rectangular grill gives it attitude.
Remember how Skodas were also ridiculed (even though their rally-going cars were very successful) in those days too?
One car I really fancied in my younger days was a 2 stroke Wartburg Knight (with its bonnet so reminiscent of the Rangie!).
Check out Sam Glover in Practical classics...loves his Ladas and is an Iron Curtain vehicle collector par excellence.

Oooh...
Back in the earliest fog of my nascent car thoughts, I wanted a lada or a skoda sleeper - bog standard looking, old man blanket on the back seat and tissues on the rear shelf, but all kinds of wrc-type naughtiness underneath. I never thought my tastes would change (mature?) enough that I would want one just for it's own aesthetic!

I love that last photo, I think it'd look real nice if you left the front valance like that but exposing some nice suspension and wide wheels.

Really need to get on with this one!  DSC_6151 by srblythe, on Flickr I could do with a set of wheels for it, I thought I had found a set of Fiat 124 Cromadora alloys but when I tried fitting they fouled the front calipers meaning I'd probably have to use spacers and longer bolts...
