Reading the XR4i thread it struck me - I havent seen an XR3i for ages. In fact I don't think I've seen one for years! So when did they go from being driven by barrys everywhere to being extinct? Were they any good in the first place and are they missed? Tell me about them!

I saw a perfect A reg mk3 XR3i yesterday. He was very pleased to have a bearded trampy bloke hooting and waving at him from a filthy mk1 golf. I remember going to a yard near me about 8 years ago and they literally had about 40 of them in, all mk3's......THATS where they all went....

I had an '88 3i ... fantastic car. Diamond white and virtually no rust, which I always thought was odd ! I did quite a bit of engine work on it and it went pretty damn quickly for a CVH. Of all the cars I've owned, I think the 3i gave me the most enjoyment for my money. I then bought a 16v Mk2 Golf GTI and was in the process of selling the 3i when a builders van lost its trailer at about 50mph (down a narrow one way street) which subsequently thumped into the back of my 3i, sending it 6ft forward and shortening it by about 1ft ... and that was that. I have always regretted not keeping it and have been hankering after another one ever since. I always preferred the earlier spec models, the models from 90 onwards with the 14" Cosworth style lattice rims and later spec bumpers never appealed as much for some reason. Plus I always preferred the MFI to the EFI. If you want one, watch out for rust ... rust ... and more rust. Particularly sills, battery tray and rear arches. Well, it is a 1980's Ford. Along with the Golf GTI they are the iconic 80's hatch, even if the VW boys don't like to admit it. My 3i shamed many a Golf in its time. Unfortunately, the barry element, the fact they are easier to get into than a hookers pants and rampant rot (particularly the 86 models) meant that many of both the Mk3 and 4 3i's ended up in the big scrapyard in the sky. I have an eye out for one at the moment, they do turn up now and then locally but finding a decent example is very difficult now.

Theres still quite a few Mk4s about, just not many in unaltered dogleg alloy glory. Where were all the MK6 XR3is in the first place? How many did they make? ten?

There's a beautiful Mk3 XR3i in sunburst red that frequents my local Morrisons. Really original. There's also a Mk3 Cabrio that parks on my street, again in red. Stunning. I think rot has claimed many of them, like superden said.
I'm actually starting to like Mk4 Escorts (!) - I've not seen one for donkeys years. I reckon the 3i and RS Turbo are finally beginning to shake off their Barry-boy image.
*EDIT* I thought they binned the XR tag in favour of the Si too. The ST was quite a bit later IIRC

They do seem to have disapeared almost completely. Strangely there seems to be a hell of a lot more cabrio versions of the mk3 and 4 in circulation, but they've never appealed to me as much. I too am starting to warm to the mk4, never thaught I would!

I saw these over the summer, both were standard xr3's I think. The yellow one must be one of the early survivors.
