Hi,
I know a few people on here from Exile the rotary family and after we had a stand with the rx7fb.com forum at the RR show I thought I'd sling the story of my build so far.
I've been into rotors for about 12 years but had a gap in the middle where I had to do grown up stuff like house and kids. But four years ago I spotted a Maya gold RX7 on eBay with a blown engine and for £127 was mine.
He was known to everyone as NEV and for 3 years I trundled around in stock form reliving my early 20's.
Even though he was fun with the 12A I wanted more power, and after meeting a guy from Exile called Ramon who would go on to help me an awful lot through this build, it was decided that a 13BT out of an FC shape RX7 was the answer.
So off I went and sorted myself an engine. ;D
It is a Series 4 13BT keg with low compression rotors, the turbo that came with it was stock but to fit these engines in a right hand drive 7 you have to push the turbo out and forward to clear the steering box. I was lucky in that another guy was running a 7 at the spec I was aiming for so I bought his turbo, manifold, series 5 gearbox, bespoke SS exhaust and Microtech ECU.
And so it began - I'll let the pics do the talking.
Engine cleaner (yes she was out)
Ready to go in - this is how we move engines around in Dorset.
Cosworth intercooler
Made me a loom
Stock FC oil cooler mounted on front beam
More cabling
Electric fans from a Seat Ibiza
All piped up
And some testing
Road mapped my Ramon just using our ears and the Innovate AFR gauge.
So that was that-done over a winter and produced a very fun (if not slightly brutal with no interior) car.
I ragged him around like that for a bit and all was good, had to have the turbo freshened up as the bush on the wastegate got worn so wouldn't make boost low down.
Bosch 044 proved reliable and pokey but my ghetto swirlpot was proving to be the weak link in the chain and was being emptied on heavy bouts of power as it was one spout short so return line had to go straight to tank. (I have four kids I was on a budget lol.
One day, the rules changed am NEV got attacked by a Toyota Hilux.
This is where a plan had to be put in place for his successor........
