yes, just a good old tidy and clean up needed really . Good ideas gtviva I've ordered some thick gasket material and some hylomar blue . Spent a couple more hours ripping it apart. Fanhousing off , exposing my DIY breather box The beast within : You can see how much I had to widen the engine bay ...about 1 1/2 inches The rear brace bars you can buy from Berg that try to tie the engine up to the bumper mounts were a rip off so I made my own years ago . It's a way beefier than the berg ones and is supposed to help with wheel hop on hard launches: Bent like a banana....is that a crack ?? oh yes, cracked nearly all the way through !! drag radials and hard launches ...I think the old girls racing days are behind her . It is solid mounted though and a bit of a crappy design so it's no surprise really ,the berg ones just sit under the case with a little rubber pad. I deffo wouldn't do it the same now....you live and learn . Took a while to get header off , because the exhaust tubing is so big and it uses the stock stud spacing you have to use M8 10mm head nuts . They round off as soon as you look at then , I needed to chisel ( the old screwdriver chisel!) a couple of them off . It's a CSP python ...stainless...mostly ....the flanges are real rusty and the tubes closest to the heads are rustier than I'd like. Hopefully a bit off wire wheel action will make it look better. Getting there though . I think I'll pull it right out now I've got this far ....only 4 bolts right ? ......

Only 4 bolts!...right. what is that 80/20 rule? 20 percent of the bolts take 80 percent of the time?!
looking good...should be nice when going back together. any plans to treat the headers to a finish, or wrap, or just clean em up and use em?...would bronze bolts for the headers be usable?

We are building a 2007cc with 78mm crank, so it’s a bit wider, it’s not a problem in the Fug but did wonder how easily it would fit into a beetle. Looks like it would still be tight 2 of the 4 bolts you must be able to do from the engine bay now? So even easier to drop it out

07lilredwagon I doubt I'll do anything to the headers apart from clean them , I wrapped them when it was all new but an oil leak soaked into the wrap and it smoked for so long I took it all off . The inside of the rear valence has a layer of heat reflective tape to save the paint work which has worked out well. I've done some really long road trips ( 10 hour drives) without anything bad happening. would look nice to have them ceramic coated thought wouldn't it no budget unfortunately. @johnthesparky19 An oval engine bay is super narrow and my engine is super wide ....wider than most I think . It has a big crank (84mm stroke), long rods (5.7" I think) and longer stroker barrels . I had to extend the cylinder shrouds 3/4 each side as well......a right pain in butt. see the gaps here: and gone here: and I needed 2 sets of those filler pieces you got for yours, if I was doing it all again I'd try and make it all a bit narrower ...would have save a lot of work . It all look lovely in these pics .......it a right flapping mess now .

Am I being really dense but can you not bolt on the manifolds before putting the engine in? Then just stick the carbs on in the bay? It'd make it easier to solve the gasket problems surely? Entirely possible I'm talking tosh of course.... I was chatting to a Beetle expert about my build and he half-jokingly suggested cutting windows through the inner wings to access the carb fittings. And he had that crazed look that spoke of too many skinned knuckles and suggested he wasn't really joking at all

And being 1 1/2” wider, the heads are wider than the engine bay anyway (?) Had a look, and strokers do seem to be a tight fit!

yeah, no chance the manifolds can go on first Cutting holes in the inner wings is a thing but the ida's are doable from the top so I did'nt need to . I did have chop a bit off of number 2 velocity stack so the deck lid would shut !! There's always going to be issues trying to fit a 180 hp 2332 in to an engine bay meant for a 1100 30 hp so it to be expected really

Managed to pull the beast out on Saturday night . It's a always a sketchy maneuver getting the thing out by myself. Plenty of bits of wood in a jenga style and near back snapping lifting (I obviously carried a risk assessment before I started ) Had it teetering on the jack with no way to get it on the ground at one point .............almost had to call the wife !! I've mounted a bus bell housing to my bench so I'll bolt it to that when I can get willing helper/unknowing sucker to come round and lift it . It aint half heavy !! I also gave the tinware the first pass de-grease. Got some of this : Not as good as brake cleaner but loads cheaper.Good enough for getting the worst off .

cheers stevenery. I didn't take many pics, it wasn't really a "car" type holiday. I wouldn't say it was particularly enjoyable taking the bug .....it was one of those things I like to do as a bit off a challenge and to show off a bit

little update . I've bolted the engine to an old bus bell housing which is attached to the end of the bench in the garage and spent a few hours cleaning all the oil and gunge of it , it was absolutly caked in dirt and oil . Came out alright .....good enough anyway . I took the sump off to give it a good clean as well . I splash of petrol got the sludge out . I also installed some retro hifi in the garage Next up is the bay : should clean up nicely.....all the oil has kept the paint nice ! Then prep and paint the tinware, it shouldn't need much work .....I'm not going for a show winner just a clean and tidy .

Not a beetle lover but I can still appreciate a nice looking, well restored car, Your work on it has been really worthwhile and your write up of the journey so far is really interesting, Looking forward to future updates, Nigel

I fell off my mountian bike last week and smashed my phone so lost a few pics.......but new phone new pics! I Had a bit more of a clean up on the tin, quick scuff with a scotchbrite and fired on a bit of satin black: It's no show winner but it'll be way nicer than before. I also fitted the sump and alt stand : Ignore the wooden prop! it's belt and braces in case the bench gets ripped off the wall when I'm asleep by the bloody great engine hanging off the side of it I had a box of misc nuts and bolts and other bits that were all caked in oily horribleness so gave it all a good clean up with de-greaser and it's all good to go again : I'll see later how the paint on the fan housing came out ......... Couple more bits and I can sling it back in , I just want to use the damn thing now ......and get on with other things/cars/projects/watching telly/going to the pub...

The fan housing came out ok : How much more black could it be ........none more black. #smelltheglove (one for the oldies ) I had a look at my carbs...........oh my days what a state to get in ........ poor old girls...hopefully I can get them back to their former glory. I also found this little guy under the car: I guess he was waiting for me to get it back on the road but could hold out .

I had a go at my carbs . pulled the stacks and jets and gave the buggers a blast with the brake cleaner and a tickle with a paint brush . I think they came up ok . put a tape alongside to show just how big the things are ! I also cleaned up the J tubes , they were covered in cooked on oil that had leaked from the rocker covers. I put a big brass wheel on a bench grinder which seemed to do the job although the motor probably wasn't quite up to the job but it just about managed. before and after I'll have to do the rest now ....that's going to be a a lot harder... I got a few more service parts and took a mock up money shot. Ready to go back in.

That picture of the MSD dizzy scares me - mine has been sat in a broken 2276 in a damp garage since 2005... My IDAs went furry even in the house! Sold them to a guy in Belgium while back.

yeah , I think MSD dizzy's were designed for so-cal not West-Ox ..... I've cleaned it out as much as I could ....it'll be fine . It's a simple thing really isn't it. there's no brains in there ...just the hall effect pick up.
I don't know what to do about the bare ally to stop it all furring up , the alt , the carb etc If I oil them it'll pick even more dirt ...I can't clear coat them ...what do other folks do ??

Funnily enough, I got a bit of ribbing from some elements in the rotary world when I bought my 48IDA for the Rex new ...which meant buying a "fake" Spanish one rather than hunting down a "proper" Italian period one. And paying twice in scene tax. Still, with the Rex languishing neglected in all weathers, lots of things in the engine bay have tarnished or corroded. But not my fake Spanish Weber. I guess I'll just never be scene enough to achieve Full Patina p.s. I'm bloody glad I only need one for an RX-7, keeping two of them fed on full honk ... you must be able to see the fuel gauge move at the same speed as the tacho needle
