right, well so much as i know is it has an eletrical fault now. this motor was working fine a while back and i've charged the battery fully. turn it on and disable the immobilser and it lights up etc, turn to start over and it clicks, dash and headlights go off and i can hear the battery bubbling. let go of the key, comes back to pos.2 on the barrel and all seems fine again!
I'm just realising whilst i type its either another ign barrel earth prob, or starter motor earth... exactly like the beige estelle i've just got running but in case anyone here has dealt with this before... in fact if anyone cares to tell me where the starter is on a straight 6...

Battery bubbling?! Surely that's not a good sign? To me, it sounds like the battery has given up, although I've been wrong before I assume you've checked the voltage at rest/when trying to turn it over? The starter is buried down the passenger side, under the intake manifold etc.. Good luck! Edit to say: If you can't find anything obvious, or get nowhere, try searching or asking on bimmer.infoOk, it's an American site, but it's got the most E34 knowledge i've found on any forum so far, and there are only minor differences between US & Euro spec cars

I would suggest trying a new battery before anything else, its not a question of voltage its what current it can supply and new batteries sem more likely to fail suddenly than older ones for some eason.

try jumping the starter first, it might be that its shorting out and causing the battery to boil. jump the starter on the 13mm nut and the 10mm nut, not the 8mm one, with ther ignition off. this would take the ignition switch out of the running. I'm guessing starter at fault on this one, but could still be the battery. if its not auto, try bumpstarting it, see if the battery still boils, if it does, its the battery, if not, starter. if your checking the switch its the black with yellow tracer wire that feeds the solenoid. this is not all clear cut tho, I haven't heard of this one before, so its everything to play for. hope some of that helps

Is it manual or auto? Could be an inhibitor switch fault if auto, though that wouldn't account for a bubbling battery! Do all the cells bubble or just one? I don't like to frighten you, but it might be worth making sure the engine hasn't siezed!

couldn't have seized from just sitting since a month ago when i last moved it surely? battery is a 6-month old item a la halfords. should have been decent, is holding a charge at least. i'll let you know what happens when i try bumping it (manual of course ) although i've been informed i'm working tomorrow so it may be some time...

If you havent started it for a month then my money is on the battery being flat. Jump it and leave it running for an hour it'll be like brand new again ;D

so, can't believe how long it was between finding that and getting time to look at it! car will not start as per last time whne i tried yesterday, so i jumped it from the fav (what a car-found it had VERY loose batt connections itself, explains starting difficulty lol). the bm fired straight up and the batt wasn't boiling. moved it about a bit. like so: put it back and it wouldnt start again. put batt in the rover and wouldnt start it either, just got loud fast clicks behind dash (weird) so I'm guessing battery although cannot yet rule out starter... oh hold on yes i can becasue it started on the jump leads? maybe?

I'd say definately battery too.. If it's only 6 months old you should be able to get it replaced for nowt though I'd have thought - everywhere over here give you 1 year warranty at least on batteries.. Nice touring btw

Is it working ok now? I'm having similar nonsense with my capri so ive ordered a new starter. Typical old ford starters, i always get a second hand one that lasts a few months so hopefully a new one will last a litte longer.
