Yesterday a car tried to squeeze past me on a single track road through a gap that wasn't quite big enough hit the van and has left a big wing mirror sized scrape down the rear side panels. Luckily its not badly dented but will probably require a respray of the panel. The problem I have is the bloke didn't stop. My passenger tells me she knows who the driver was and where they live.
Do I have to report this to the police or should I just try and talk to the bloke and see what he says. The latter worries me a little as judging by the way he was driving, i.e very fast and aggresively he might be aggressive in person as well.

Ring the police, you will only hear different sides on a forum. You are meant to report any accident by law aren't you?

The Police won't be interested. You are obliged to stop and exchange details, there is no Law which requires you to report an accident unless there are injuries or you are causing an obstruction.
Report the accident to your Insurance company giving the Registration Number of the offending vehicle and leave it at that. Given the circumstances of the accident and lack of independant witnesses, I'd say the best you could hope for is 'knock-for-knock', so if a respray is less than the cost of your excess, you may as well just suck it up and get it repaired yourself.

I believe the law is you have to at least stop and exchange details, failing to do so is classed as hit and run.
Ring the police and have the curse word sorted out!

Given that you're still of an age where insurance is painful, and the likelihood is that you will end up doing the work yourself/through work, I'd just chalk it up to experience and fix it at the same time as your denty wing.
It puts you out in terms of time/money, but I can't imagine you'd be in a better position if you went through insurance. Obviously there is still a legal obligation to inform your insurance co regardless of whether you claim or not.

Just fix it. It's bad luck.
