Yeah. Ours at work is a 2001, and has "Tow/Haul" mode, on a push-button on the end of the shifter. Keeps in gears longer and doesn't engage overdrive until about 50 instead of 40 with it off, and disengages it at the mere hint of pushing on the gas.
If that's what the factory mode does, I'd say there's truth to the tale.
Thrashed everywhere, our Ashtray does 18 US MPG, about 22 UK.
Driving position is horrible, everything else great. Dashboard is true GM parts-bin. Dull to look at, cheap to fix.
