The Gol name has been used on all sorts of random stuff, right up to the newest model which is a polo-sized 'regular' (fwd, front engined, watercooled) car.
I'm sure they did a Gol which was a mk1 golf with a few extra touches (mk2 dash i think, big plastic bumpers and a few safety things like side repeaters), i saw one in Nottingham and it just looked weird.
VW have a habit of using the same names on different cars in different countries, so a Brazilian Gol may be different to a mexican Gol at various stages through the years. They've often bandied the Santana name around on different cars too.
It's also interesting to note that some countries cope with older model long after they've been replaced.... you can import a 'brand new' mk4 Golf from Brazil as the mk5 hasn't been released there. In Mexico the 'Golf' is a mk4 golf, but the 'GTI' is a mk5 Golf GTI.

the first gols had an aircooled engine...this one is a later one : my favourite car is a Fox (not the ugly new one) , which was a mixture of the MkI Passat with engines of the Mk.II and looked like a smaller Jetta Mk.I. They did a nice 2-door station wagon, too. Some Foxes were sold in the US and Canada, i think (but i am not sure) some were also sold in Belgium. So it has the engine straight like the Mk1/2 Passat and not transversal...

VW built the Hillman Avenger under licence in Brazil.....marketed as the VW Dodge 1500, if ever you hear of an Avenger nut speaking in hushed, reverential tones about the famed 'Brazilian Block' 1.9litre Avenger engine, this is where it came from. Brian

VW also built the Apollo in Brazil, which is their version of the Ford Verona (crossover car much like the Sharan/Galaxy).... which itself is a two-door version of the mk2 Orion. Ford styling (mostly Orion, but with two missing doors and Sapphire back lights) but with the 1.8 'DX' VW motor in it. Weird doesn't even start!
