NEED a Y 2001 reg on/newer (due to road tax costs) Diesel (economy and torque) up to 1.9 engine (Due to insurance) Needs to have history of cam belt done (Reliabilty) Long MOT and some Tax (as I want to drive it home). Good runner requireing no essentail work. Preferred with tow bar (if no tow bar Ill need to hold some cash for this £80-£90 depending on car) Must be a 5dr or Estate model with less than 130k (Most of these are good for 200k so can be scrapped befor new belt needed) Not in White Thanks (seem to rust more)
The following cars have been deemed as Fuel, Tax, Insurance Freindly and capable of meeting the needs of the owner. Listed in preffered order
Vauxhall Astra Estate1.7 DTI ls (AC) Vauxhall Astra Eco 1.7dti ls (AC) Vauxhall Astra 1.7dti ls (AC) Vauxhall Corsa Di Ford Focus Estate 1.8 (Not Ghia Model) Ford Focus 1.8 (Not Ghia Model) Fiat Stilo1.9 JTD Renault Megan 1.9 (105 bhp, DCI Only) Fiat Punto 1.9 JTD (Vauhall Corsa 1.5td must be local to Essex up to £600 as would be a temp car)
Aircon would be an advantage up to £1000. Will consider collection from anywhere in England (£1000 less travel costs)

So I not willing to take the chance. Theres a megan and a punto avaliable to me but they are a long way away and cant get there till next week. Y reg on means cheap tax, The xsaras are nice but insurance group is to hi ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) I have to turn down a seat Torledo as Insurance company wanted loads ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png) and thats a group seven but apparently it was because of posible reapair costs ![::)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/eyesroll.png)

Because the road tax is cheaper mate. 2ltr are a rape on insurance and vectras are to as well as the extra fuel. The 2.O are better with haveing a chain though I do agree on that lol

I doubt you'll be interested because your criteria are very specific, but it's worth a mention... I've got a Mazda Demio 5dr manual with 94,000 miles on the clock. It's a petrol but pretty nippy and also economical. Very, very good condition (far better than you'd get within your criteria otherwise) and pretty loaded with AC, 4 x electric windows, electric sunroof, electric mirrors, remote central locking, alloys, CD player etc.... 1 previous owner from new (I'm second owner) and very reliable (typical Japanese build). A fair bit of history and cambelt changed at 71,000 miles but it's a non interferance engine, so not an issue anyway. Looking for £800 and can put tax on at cost (£74 for 6 months which is a lot cheaper than diesels) Advert here - please take a look through it before dismissing it for being a petrol....you'll probably struggle to find something else as good for the money that fits your criteria: retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=bugmot&action=display&thread=131916[edit] Just to add, by the time you factor in the cheaper tax and (average) 7pence per litre difference between petrol and diesel, this car works out cheaper to run than my trusty and economical Isuzu engined Cavalier TD. Approx £4.00 saving per tank and I'm still getting a solid mid-late 40's on a run. Food for thought.... [/edit]

Why not look for something a bit older, as you sometimes see a Citroen ZX 1.9D estate on ebay. They are good for 50mpg, the ride is great, and the saving you make on the purchase price (£500?) can be put aside to keep it running.
Or something like a Mercedes c250 estate?

[/edit] Comparing this to a Corsa DI which this is, its equivialant over 70k on combined milage figures you looking at 3k difference on fuel, based on prices at my local Tescos last night. also the tax and insurance is higher. I feel this would also lack the Torque. I did look into it ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) . But looking at the tax bandings on 2001 Y reg model It shows there not economical Group L £460 a year ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png)

But looking at the tax bandings on 2001 Y reg model It shows there not economical Group L £460 a year ![:o](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/shocked.png) But mine's £135 a year, not £460! Tax bandings are not a reflection of MPG anyway, so viewing them as such is completely misleading. I'm not going to comment any further because it's obviously not the right car. Good luck with your search....

None of the cars you mention in post 1 are particularly renowned for reliability. A choice vehicle for robust mechanicals, good economy and cheap to buy and run would be an Audi 80 TDI Avant in my opinion. You could get a clean one for well under a grand as well, so you could offset that saving against your first years running costs. ![](http://www.parts-specs.com/photos/0113365-audi-80-avant-1.9-tdi-1992.jpg) Just at that, what a good old horse. If you can find a car within your criteria that will last for 5 years with no maintenance costs you are a better man than I. Good luck sir!
