I'm of the opinion that, despite being frightening in principle, it is easier to remove large parts of (semi) decent metal to get in at severely rusted areas. Access is everything when doing good body repairs and you can get surprisingly good results putting a detached panel back where it came from.
A good example is the windscreen pillar repair done on the camper van rebuild.
The panel was off and back on again in a couple of days I believe.

EPIC weld-athon. Loving reading this thread. Keep up the good work, when you're driving round in a shiny-almost-new rolls and parking it next to chequebook restos at shows etc, to be able to show people the pics and say 'I did that' will be a pretty good feeling I expect.

There will likely be much tugging of beards, shaking of jowls and folding of Aran knit arms at this resto approach too, which is all the better! I like seeing this thread, it reminds one that all cars rot no matter how prestigious.

I've got a day off work today. Net result is that I'm still sat here in bed @ 10:50 because I thought I would re-read your thread..... I do like the full on weldathon threads. Between you and KevBarlas with his Ford Thames (http://retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides&action=display&thread=89224&page=1) I think we are going to run out of Mig wire as a nation! Pleased with the results and useability at the price.It says on the tin weldable.  on Flickr Pleased with how it sits just on the springs. I will be aiming for this height on air I think. Absolutely loving this thread. A mate's having an earlier Shadow fixed up. I never really considered just how cool they are until I saw it in the flesh: things of beauty and integrity (and rust, obviously!).

Thank you for the continuing support and interest. Been a bit waylaid with sadovaning over the Easter holidays and getting the old sadovan ready for sale aannnnnd helping out with a bumped Hardley Dangerous (matt blacking it so that okay) Retrolegends: I have not yet settled on wheels. These things have a pcd near of all things, a Transit Van, Its 6" or there about's (fanar fanar) but the centre sipgot is around 3" diameter so its limited all the normal choices or routes. I have yet to try a 'van wheel for fit and offset. There is the steels/banded/various style of hub cap route for simplicity.....I am still half considering (in the long run) Bmw parts for the hubs front and rear, the rear arms are heavy steel and therefore easy to modifiy and or make a new arrrangement and hang it of the now good rear beam mounting points. Anyone have a E38 or E39 in bits with parts for nupence? Thought i'd ask..Really suspension/wheel wise I am going to concentrate on the air. Normally you would just clash on but most suspension parts on this are showing excessive signs of being sh one tee. The first picture shows the overall look of the rear struts (doesn't show the leaks though) and the last one is the close up of the base of the units.....  on Flickr  on Flickr As you can see, it is wasting away to nowt to match everything else on this motor.. However, With a compression ratio of 7.1 I think that you need to compliment your welding skills with a massive pair of turbo's to go and scare the proletariat.

Thanks. Mmmmm turbos.....NO! Back away from the voices.For the moment anyway......do you have any cheap? Updates then.I was going to leave the updates for a bit as its been pretty much rinse and repeat of the n/s but with a battery box in the way and, surprisingly a bit more rust. I have 90% finished the osr arch which again brought me back down to the lower rear quarter which led to the lower rear corner which attaches, or should attach to the end of the osr chassis leg...if it was there.Pictures:  on Flickr The other side of thee offending article your honor.Points for guessing the weight of it and how many layers of metal, filler and paint.  on Flickr ..which was hiding this.  on Flickr A bit closer at the osr corner.  on Flickr and the same area from the inside of the boot.  on Flickr and off  on Flickr the bumper reinforcing area  on Flickr and off:  on Flickr Scuttles off to find religion. Oh well I thought.Can't be to bad. At least inside the 'rail it'll be okay,like the other side was.....no?  on Flickr The reinforcing plate had rotted through.  on Flickr That was hidden by a quality repair in the inside of the battery/tool box well. Fortunately it hadn't attacked the 'leg itself.  on Flickr So an Olympic cutting and welding session while been careful not to disturb the outer quoter as most of the integrity had either rusted away or had to come out to get at the rusty bits. So after all the cutting was done (lyrics of a song there..?) The inner bumper reinforcing plate was removed and replaced. The outer section of 'leg has been replaced. The outer bumper reinforcing plate has been replaced. The outside wall of the battery/tool box has been repaired. The picture below is up to that point.  on Flickr I have also done the exhaust hanger and inner quarter support gusset. Pictures will follow soon. Here is the nearly completed arch.
