twincamgti in da house: what manufacturers have you found best
Swedish Bahco all the way, I have also some tools from Snap On that I am happy as a clam with, on the down side I have had some bad experiences with Kamasa and then we also have some low budget brands like Biltema (our Halfords) that I woun't touch....

I've found Halfords tools adequate for the job - especially at the price, but I wouldn't expect them to last for more than 5 years. Definately agree with reanimation verdict of buying the best you can, look after them and they'll look after you etc.

The majority of my tools are Mac or Snap On. I got some flank drive spanners which although good were expensive. I've had my Kamasa wall drive socket set for 7 years now, only recently I broke the half inch and quarter drive ratchets, but I did abuse them. I'm shocked nobody has mentioned Teng, they are bloody good tools and reasonably priced.

Mostly got Sealey stuff - you need to steer clear of some of their cheaper tools though! The pliers and AK692 socket set are excellent for what I do with them. Had a cheaper Sealey socket set which wasn't so good. Most of my spannering takes place on my Lambretta rather than the cars though!
For heavy duty stuff my bro is usually involved so I get to use his Snap-On stuff anyway.
Undoubtedly the greatest spanners I have are my "King Dick" hand-me-downs which my Dad had when he was a lad. 40+ years of use / misuse and still going strong!
Edit: Also got a Teng screwdriver set which is AWESOME. Now those screwdrivers have seen PROPER action on the cars and in a housey-DIY way too!

I do have a fair collection of King Dick for working on my older toys, they will out live me. Stanley tools bought out CK tools in the 80's, now they are owned by Mac tools.

Have been impressed by some of the Clarke stuff I've got but I tend not to get the cheaper stuff if I can avoid it. Interesting reading about the cheapo stuff. I've got a Clarke socket set in a metal case which is nice to use and has taken a lot of abuse, a DTI and magnetic stand which is fine in quality and a handful of other bits that don't spring to mind.
I have an el cheapo French supermarket 9-Euro socket and driver set in the back of the car. The boot doesn't lock well and it's got me out of trouble soooooo many times it's not true. I would never risk leaving a good socket set in there knowing that some scumbag might get his paws on my tools. Never. As long as the cheap one has enough to get me home then I'm happy as Larry.
Edit: and forgot to mention with a cheap socket set I have cheap spares that I can cut up when I need to make a custom tool like for the end of my alternator. Wouldn't cut up a good one.

Noop they sold that off years ago, now they are shipping most manufaturing to China and will next year close down the last factory here in Sweden, Enköping, some 300 will loose their jobs here and it's sad to see it go......

I have a few "vintage" King Dick spanners in my toolbox too! Although they're all AF / Whit / etc sizes so not a lot of use in most of the cars I tend to own. Another good budget brand (although I've not seen them around for ages) is Richmond's Metrinch spanners and sockets. Wall-drive, and fits more than one size of bolt (metric and Imperial). One thing I saw that I thought looked like a good idea was a socket that was full of little pins, you pushed it onto the bolt and the pins kind of gripped whatever size head it was. Looked pretty useful for getting rounded bolts out! Does anyone know what I'm on about?! ;D ;D
