I'm not sure why those bothered about a cars image seem to prefer the Dagenham dustbins salesman/minicab history over an expensive open top sports car?
I'm all for having an opinion about a car, but there seems to be a lot of opinions about the cars owners in this thread and even if you forget the Cortinas history (Think how you look at a Mondeo these days) there are just as many anoraks who own old school fords as there are flat cappers who own trumpets.
Forget the "image" of the cars and look at the cars themselves.

That's a very good point, I think it might well come down to me being concerned about being 'tarnished with the same image' of Stag ownership. Saying that, it would probably never be that shiny. I do also like to drive something a little bit different though and these days The Cortina might be a bit more different to a Stag. Or there's the original plan of dropping a 2.5ltr BMW 24 valve straight six into one of these: That'll be after I've perfected my welding on the Cortina though.

Personally I would love a trad brit sports car, but then I remember buying up mk4 Cortinas for 50 quid or so, driving them until they broke down and then weighing them in and buying another one.

I'm wandering off from the original post, but it's strange how so many have expressed concern at the beardy, flat-cap image of the Stag. Everything has potential, so surely applying some RR treatment to a Stag will make it stand out from the flat-cap scene. We've already seen some nice examples on RR of other traditionally flat-cap fodder like MGB and TR6, and that's what I have in mind for the Scimitar too.

TBH beardy flat cap is not something i have ever axxoiated with the stag? MGB yes but never the stag but then perhaps that's why i voted for it ? The stag is one of only 2 non fords i long for for some strange reason, i'm a died-in-the-wool ford fan (christ i even named me youngest son Ford) allways will be but there's something about the stag i absolutly love

The Stag would have ended up de-bumpered and lowered and after seeing the red Stag in my original post, the owner has decided he'd like to do the same.

These last few posts have raised a new question with me. As time has moved on and there are a few younger generations of lovers of old cars amongst, have the pre-conceptions of the types of owners of certain cars changed?
i.e. are MG's still generally perceived as being the preserve of beardies? are Stags for those who want to be able to own a Classic without too much thought or hassle and whom have a big enough cheque book?

Know its pointless now, but would have said keep the cortina, as your still in your 30s, and thus too young for a Stag ;D (sorry chasr if your not old )

I have always tried to avoid one make car shows ever since I took my matt black and flamed mk1 escort out with my mates and it ended up parked in a long row of pastel coloured 2 door mk1 escorts, you could easily pick my car out from anywhere in the show just because it was a different colour everything else just looked the same.
I have been to a couple of local performance Volvo meets recently to get to know some of the forum guys, mines the only 940 there usually but even then they all look the same barring colour, body kit or wheel differences.
It doesnt matter how rare you think something is there can be loads turn up at some shows.
