difficult one - i kept an eye on the Cortina progress towards the start when i still owned mine, and it looks on the outside identical! However, sometimes you've got to move on... The enthusiasm is obviously there for the stag, so I think you should use it, and make something great! + 1 Stag

As someone who loves his triumphs, I voted Tina!, Last time I went to Bromley Pagent there were 6 TR7 of any type and only a handfull more of the rest of the TR lot. There were ROWS of stags as well as a crowded club stand. Its not that I don't like the Stag but you just don't see that many cortina's theses days. The Stag will sap your wallet and enthusiasm and then be one of many, the Tina will be easier to fix and be more special. All of this is my opinion, so if you don't like just ignore me - everyone else does. Have a blown Stag from that Bromley show.

I think you guys are going to the wrong shows, at any Ford meat there are loads of Cortinas still and as they are one of the cheapest RWD old school fords more pop out of the woodwork all the time.
I like Cortinas, but its still just a Cortina, the fact there may be more Stags at shows does not lessen the fact that its a nice car, arguably better looking, nicer to drive, open top, probably no worse on fuel, better equipped etc etc.
Personally i would love a stag, de bumper it, paint it a dark colour, drop it in the weeds on some wide black rims and fit an engine with a manual box, some grunt and a loud exhaust.

I'm saying Cortina for sure. I am pretty biased admittedly, but they are amazing! There's probably more people restoring Stag's than Cortina's, so keep and save the Ford, and let someone else save the Stag.Plus Cortina is more practicle, more unusual these days, and (I think anyway) look way better! On the other hand, if you sell the Cortina, let me know, and ill have it to go with my other one!

Put the 24v into the stag, put the essex out of the stag into the Cortina, sell the cortina on EBay, and get silly money for it, lavish that money on the stag and have a big bag of WIN thats your answer right there +1 This is win whichever way you look at it ;D

Put the 24v in the stag, I have owned a 24v Cortina and they are humungously grinly to drive, I can only surmise that the same engine in a trad brit convertible would make your smile so wide the top of your head would fall off. If you don't want the stag, ask him if he wants to swop it on a volvo turbo cos i'll have it if its half reasonable. Amazinly enough i agree, you want common 24V cortinas are common there hundreds about, do the stag

You guys really are the greatest! I have had a very quick look at the Stag today. The owner is away and it's under a cover but I had a look and feel around the arches and sills and all is good and solid. The only rot was at the very lower edge at the back of the rear wing. Oh, and of course the dent to the front wing which is actualy at the front by the indicator side repeater and the mangled drivers door. It needs a proper look with the cover off and the doors, boot and bonnet open but so far it is a more solid proposition than the Cortina. It's also Tax exempt! If the offer price still holds and I can get the funds together then at the moment from what I've seen I think I might be stupid to turn it down. I'll keep you all posted. Still love the Corty though.

If I go for the Stag the Cortina will indeed be offered up for sale (minus engine and gearbox).
It does however need a fair amount of work, those photos are old. I shall endevour to give it a clean and take some up to date photos of it. It does however benefit from a clean tidy interior, uprated front brakes an d a full set of fitted deflex poly-bushes.
But that's if I get the Stag.

Be ruled by your heart on this one I reckon, not blindly mind If your after a car to love and cherish then it sounds like you want the stag. Remember to be realistic with what you take on and maybe question why your Cortina sits as it does to prevent history repeating.

A good Stag is a lovely thing. A dog of a Stag is just that, and doesn't really do any justice to what is a great car when sorted. Tread carefully No point pouring money in to a black hole if it's not worth it in the first place.

Stags are great (I've got one) but 500 notes buys one that needs a lot of work and will always need something doing to it.

I'm afraid this has all just become rather academic as the owner has had a change of heart and decided he no longer wishes to sell. He has been reducing his fleet and has sold a rough Porsche 928 and a GT6 along with a load of spares. This has freed up enough space to allow him to keep the Stag.
Oh well, c'est la vie...

Perhaps it wasn't meant to be.
Some good advice in this thread, but you have to ask why the Cortina has been languishing for so long. I know you mentioned family commitments, but do those ever truely go away?
Do you have the time and enthusiasm to finish the Cortina? If the answer is no, I'd say you'll not get much for the Cortina, and the Stag could turn into the same story of a languishing project.
You must have started the Cortina project for a reason, perhaps with the same enthusiasm you've had for this Stag? Recall that enthusiasm and apply it to the Cortina. Complete it and live to desire a Stag another day.

Voting has been neck and neck all the way.
I am now going full steam ahead getting the Escort finished so that I can rip into the Cortina. I get an hour a day lunch break to play (car is at work) but need to allow time to draw the keys, unlock the workshop and set up, then pack away and return the keys. So tool time is 30 to 40mins. Also negotiating permission from wife to be allowed two evenings a week on it (2hr slots each time). It'll feel great when that Escort is finished, proven to work, and goes off to its new owner.
Then I'll be down to one project to concentrate all my efforts on.

Has to be the Cortina 100%.
Stags do nothing for me, styling, character, mechanically, and they are far too 'flat cap, tweed & beard' anyway for my liking!

Has to be the Cortina 100%. Stags do nothing for me, styling, character, mechanically, and they are far too 'flat cap, tweed & beard' anyway for my liking! Mechanically Triumphs of that period have been rather advanced and they certainly have character. Triumph are definately a manufacturer with an identity. However, the 'flat cap, tweed & beard' bit is a big concern. A less obvious 2000 saloon would be better and they're a lot cheaper too. But I haven't been offered one of those so Cortina it is. Thanks for all the replies everyone and to all those who took the time to vote. Anyone want to buy a tidy modified (not chaved) mk3 Escort Cabrio? Smiler.
