I was looking at the bolt holes and think they need toughening up a bit.  P1020334 by jono_misfit, on Flickr I was thinking of doing something like this  P1020336 by jono_misfit, on Flickr but then came to my senses and decided penny washers will be more than enough.  P1020337 by jono_misfit, on Flickr so that leaves one thing to do. weld it. I want to make sure its all nicely locked square before welding, so drilled and tapped the bench plate.  P1020338 by jono_misfit, on Flickr drilled some 19mmk box as spacers  P1020339 by jono_misfit, on Flickr welded on the penny washers and welded the back seam  P1020340 by jono_misfit, on Flickr plug welds  P1020341 by jono_misfit, on Flickr and not shown stitched the seam on the inside. Furk me that suddenly got very very stiff, the lower half is very difficult to flex now. back rest in  P1020342 by jono_misfit, on Flickr plugged and stitched  P1020343 by jono_misfit, on Flickr start on the side plates  P1020344 by jono_misfit, on Flickr relieved for the bolt head, and then plug and stitched  P1020345 by jono_misfit, on Flickr and the other side  P1020346 by jono_misfit, on Flickr bottom of the seat now solid.  P1020347 by jono_misfit, on Flickr one shoulder rest in  P1020348 by jono_misfit, on Flickr I was going to set the left hand should so it'll work for the passenger side, however having tried to put it in place it's struggling to fit, mainly due to be mounted about 8" lower. will have to consider what i'll tweak for the passenger one. So welded the existing one in  P1020349 by jono_misfit, on Flickr shoulder / head support welded on  P1020350 by jono_misfit, on Flickr harness guides welded in on the front after flaring  P1020351 by jono_misfit, on Flickr I'm pleased with the result. it is absolutely rock solid, like 0 flex. Much much stiffer than the fibreglass seats i've got. I was also impressed that it didnt warp all over the place. only question... how much does it weight? As it stands, 7kg. How much does a normal GRP race seat weight.... about 6-7kg including covers / cushions. Carbon ones more about 4.5kg. So mines not too bad. I could probably swage out a few more holes to get the weight down. A few bits to do to finish it up, mainly do the wire edging in a few places and a few more welds. Then its clean it all up.... and the nightmare of the job that will be painting it. Till next time. |

It doesn't look it but it's not bad.
Once it's got some neoprene mat in key places it should be pretty comfortable.

Still undecided.
This is the prototype so probably just paint it.
Although there's a new powder coating place just opened near me, so may enquire as to the cost.
I'm thinking white so I can hydrodip it leopard print :-)

The steel rod I ordered for the wire edging didnt turn up on time. I put the seat in the car to see how it fitted with it.  P1020352 by jono_misfit, on Flickr not too bad, and should fit better once I wire edge the ... um.. edges. I think overall it fits in with the look of the car.  P1020353 by jono_misfit, on Flickr thought i had better check it with the wheel in position to make sure the seat position was ok first.  P1020354 by jono_misfit, on Flickr lines up fairly well  P1020356 by jono_misfit, on Flickr took some measurements from the seat, then started having a think about how the seat mount will need to go  P1020357 by jono_misfit, on Flickr which then progressed onto a full size doodle  P1020358 by jono_misfit, on Flickr the seat needs to be offset over by 55mm v's the vertical plane the seat mount bolts to, the front bolt holes on the seat sit 75mm behind the centre of the chassis bolt hole, and the base of the seat is 120mm above the chassis mount bolt hole centre line. this was taking some thinking about, so doodled some more  P1020359 by jono_misfit, on Flickr then started on the seat base mount  P1020360 by jono_misfit, on Flickr then notched to clear some of the swaged holes  P1020361 by jono_misfit, on Flickr and tigged together.  P1020362 by jono_misfit, on Flickr I changed the ceramic shield to a gas focussing one, what a difference! so much easier to weld! i then clamped the seat mount jig to the bench as a basis of where the bolt holes are  P1020363 by jono_misfit, on Flickr and started bending up some starts to hold it all the right height / position  P1020364 by jono_misfit, on Flickr and on the other side  P1020365 by jono_misfit, on Flickr you can see the offset clearer here  P1020366 by jono_misfit, on Flickr Its all to help me get a visualisation for how i'm going to make this. I suspect it'll be made with sheet metal and swaged holes. |

Plenty of clearance for under seat audio by the looks of things!
*guessing the floorpan and tunnel adjustments will have something to say with that though..

You own this style of fab! very cool work on the seats. as I was scrolling through the pics, I thought that you might have flex in an area or two, then your gussets addressed any concerns as the pics scrolled by. very nice!

Surprisingly so. I appreciate you only have my word for this but it is. Possibly not for 8hrs cross UK trips but general drives should be.
I do like my Swiss cheese look on things. Others are a tad more restrained in their application.
I think the car is more likely to flex than the seat.
There should be enough room under the seat for a battery or amp. Passenger seat sits lower so probably not much space under it.

So only a very very short session as had family events on. I bought a cheap Chinese made tube bender as it was on special and looks handy. I wasnt expecting great things. I needed to make a holder for the vice  P1020367 by jono_misfit, on Flickr It does 10 - 25mm tube, so thought i'd try out the range. 25mm, which I then squashed in the press to see how an end would go  P1020368 by jono_misfit, on Flickr and some 10mm  P1020369 by jono_misfit, on Flickr It works quite nicely. Will need to see where I can start making swoopy tube bits to go with my swaged holes. the instructions were interesting.  P1020370 by jono_misfit, on Flickr on the actual morris I started making a template for the side of the seat mount,  P1020371 by jono_misfit, on Flickr this was as far as I got as with a night deprived of sleep by toddler_misfit my enthusiasm for anything other than sleep had waned... |

today did not go as i hoped. I put it down to having a cold. took the template, marked it out onto a bit of tin  P1020372 by jono_misfit, on Flickr applied some holeyess to it  P1020373 by jono_misfit, on Flickr folded, swaged, and adjusted... and forgot to take any pics roughly in position to try mounting the seat.  P1020374 by jono_misfit, on Flickr the other side is a flat plate  P1020375 by jono_misfit, on Flickr i footered about for ages trying to get it in the right position, it wasnt having it. the biggest restriction is the notch in the seat back needs to be bigger, and the edges for the legs need to be rolled over still. Better do that then. Attack the seat with the grinder  P1020380 by jono_misfit, on Flickr  P1020381 by jono_misfit, on Flickr cut a piece of metal to the right shape and weld in and dress back  P1020382 by jono_misfit, on Flickr then start on the front edges Cut some wire and bend to shape.  P1020376 by jono_misfit, on Flickr pushed into position, then tacked in a couple of spots so its fixed solid.  P1020377 by jono_misfit, on Flickr then dress with the hammer, gently. gave a very surprising amount of stiffness to the edge  P1020378 by jono_misfit, on Flickr and the other side  P1020379 by jono_misfit, on Flickr a few extra welds added to some low points so I can dress it back. having done these bits I went back to trying to fit the seat. I was struggling with the way I was doing it. So spent about an hour musing on different approaches. Eventually I decided i'm going to have to make it from 19mm box / tube, for stiffness and ease of manufacture. But i've run out of time, so thats for the next session. |

right, Back onto the seat mount, i'm pretty certain there's only one way I'm going to end up with a nice mount and thats build a prototype mount thats functional, and then at a later point use that to make a jig that I can then build the seat mount to. prototype mount it is I bent up a couple of pieces of 19mm tube in the bender, flattened the ends in the press, then drilled a hole.  P1020383 by jono_misfit, on Flickr then got carried away and forgot to take any pictures for a while.... put the seat in temp to try and work out the location  P1020384 by jono_misfit, on Flickr tack in the front mount, then the seat mount rails to the cross rails  P1020385 by jono_misfit, on Flickr the seat is now rigid, in a position that aligns you to the steering wheel and pedals axis,  P1020386 by jono_misfit, on Flickr  P1020387 by jono_misfit, on Flickr it can only go fwd though on the mounts not back any further. If anyone is taller than me (5ft 10) they'll struggle to fit.  P1020388 by jono_misfit, on Flickr and this is the not particularly pretty looking mount. Right, on with trying to make this less ugly. mark out a template, make it more awkward by starting in one place with one colour pen, then changing place and pen colour.. Very similar postion to mine - I'm a little further back.
You might need to angle your seat back a bit as you need more thigh support to avoid a numb bum when driving.

Visibility is surprisingly ok...ish, but I suspect parking will be fraught with concern as you have no idea where the exact front is.
Thanks. I can see there being a lit of tweaks to seating position once the thing is mobile.

Mrs_misfit wanted peace in the summer palace so I tidied the workshop a bit, contemplated for a while, then decided to make a start on seat no.2 as it was quiet work. start with the template  P1020418 by jono_misfit, on Flickr mark some lines  P1020420 by jono_misfit, on Flickr mark some more lines  P1020421 by jono_misfit, on Flickr and some more  P1020422 by jono_misfit, on Flickr and some more  P1020423 by jono_misfit, on Flickr some slight changes to the seat v's the drivers one, to sort it being lower, to give some extra space for a wider range of passengers (about 35mm wider on the base), and to clear some other obstacles the other seat didnt have to. Will see how it goes. |
