few more bits to the bead guide made tonight, the matching half that means its supported out the other side P1010976 by jono_misfit, on Flickr despite being a heath robinson contraption I managed to get the supports reasonably straight P1010975 by jono_misfit, on Flickr it separates into two halves P1010974 by jono_misfit, on Flickr so it can pass through the middle of the roller before being assembled P1010971 by jono_misfit, on Flickr P1010970 by jono_misfit, on Flickr works quite nicely without the much brow furrowing trying to keep it straight manually P1010972 by jono_misfit, on Flickr P1010973 by jono_misfit, on Flickr when its a more sociable time to be using noisy power tools i'll clean it all up and prettify it.

Cleaned up the bead roller guide (not pictured) Next job (of the endless list) make a turbo flange for here P1010977 by jono_misfit, on Flickr i am aware these can be bought but for whatever reason have decided I should make one... no i don't know why either. find a suitable piece of steel in the scrap bin P1010978 by jono_misfit, on Flickr make a rough card template, cheerio flavoured, other overly sugared cereals are available. P1010979 by jono_misfit, on Flickr start a magic incantation to get the centre point P1010980 by jono_misfit, on Flickr mark out the steel, straight lines are where it'll get cut before shaping P1010981 by jono_misfit, on Flickr hacksaw..... curse myself for not having wired in the inverter to run the power hacksaw yet...... 12mm steel takes a lot of cutting. P1010982 by jono_misfit, on Flickr mark out two of the bolt holes P1010983 by jono_misfit, on Flickr drill, and bolt to the turbo so i can more accurately locate the last hole. P1010984 by jono_misfit, on Flickr Transfer punched and also arc marked it out to check P1010985 by jono_misfit, on Flickr drill, and sigh with relief when it lines up without "relaxing" the hole P1010986 by jono_misfit, on Flickr scribed to the cut point P1010987 by jono_misfit, on Flickr rough cut (again kill self with the hacksawing effort)and mark out the hole centre location. I could have used my blue darchem marking out fluid... but it was over the other side of the workshop and a sharpie was to hand. P1010989 by jono_misfit, on Flickr mount in the drill/mill and cut out to size P1010990 by jono_misfit, on Flickr Took a while to drill but got there P1010991 by jono_misfit, on Flickr lost two cutter teeth when it broke through though :-( P1010993 by jono_misfit, on Flickr lines up nicely. will give it a final fettle when i have a gasket P1010994 by jono_misfit, on Flickr I also put it back on the mill and cleaned up some of the hacksaw edges. I needs properly finished though, but will do this when on to the pipes. P1010995 by jono_misfit, on Flickr I faffed about with position for ages, then tacked it in with 3 temporary supports. This means I now have a fixed flange point to build to when I do the exhaust. P1010997 by jono_misfit, on Flickr and with the turbo on P1010998 by jono_misfit, on Flickr nice and far forward, so hopefully my exhaust routing will work. P1010999 by jono_misfit, on Flickr in between escort bits I knocked up the other steering arm to rod end adaptor P1020006 by jono_misfit, on Flickr It came out ok, apart from the chatter on the transition. Not having the right size of drill bits didn't help and I needed to make a extra small boring tool to do one of the bits. Not sure what the next morris job is. Maybe a first attempt at making a seat or inner wings. Cant progress the exhaust until i buy tubes.

That will be a very special and nice car when finished! On you tube there is the Skid Factory which is pleasant to follow and gives a lot of information about fitting turbos and intercooler and is fun to watch. But no swag holes...
Keep up the good work! Peter

I hope so. Cool. Will give that a watch.
Maybe I should go the same way as everyone seems to be going and do a jono_misfit YouTube channel.

You could do that as your build is interesting enough but you have to be the right person for it and the biggest issue is the time involved in filming-editing and on the succesfull You tube series like Binkey and the Skid Factory, there are people who do the filmimg and the editing. I quess it only works if it is your day job.

Thats the main reason I haven't started doing one. Time to create / produce.
There's a whole spectrum of video streams out there with varying quality.
I'd like to do the more professional end but with equipment i have and as a solo act I don't think I'd get there.
I may do a test reel and see how it goes.

Personally I prefer the photo and text variant. I can read it at work, and I don't have to listen to curse word free-to-use music.

So I was going to start on the mount for the handbrake, but as I want a vertical hydraulic one, i thought i'd better check the available space. to do this i need my seat mock up in position, but to do that I need to mod it as it sits a lot lower than the drivers one. Luckily being cardboard this only requires a knife P1020017 by jono_misfit, on Flickr passenger can see over the dashboard.... just P1020018 by jono_misfit, on Flickr it'll never be a comfortable ride, but the passenger side is quite cramped P1020019 by jono_misfit, on Flickr feet go down there somewhere. P1020021 by jono_misfit, on Flickr which is where the first issue came about in the quest for the handbrake position. Depending where the feet goe affects the clearance to the handbrake so next up is a foot rest. card template started P1020022 by jono_misfit, on Flickr will go down here P1020023 by jono_misfit, on Flickr tweak about a bit so it can reach some mounting points P1020024 by jono_misfit, on Flickr before I can convert to steel I need some proper mounting points in Mail rail side can be cut from some box section P1020025 by jono_misfit, on Flickr Tunnel side need to be fabricated mark out some steel P1020026 by jono_misfit, on Flickr cut P1020027 by jono_misfit, on Flickr fold and weld in some captive nuts P1020028 by jono_misfit, on Flickr fit to the chassis P1020029 by jono_misfit, on Flickr transfer to steel P1020030 by jono_misfit, on Flickr trim P1020031 by jono_misfit, on Flickr mark out beads and holes P1020032 by jono_misfit, on Flickr punch a lot of holes P1020033 by jono_misfit, on Flickr bead, and put in the first bend P1020034 by jono_misfit, on Flickr put in more folds P1020035 by jono_misfit, on Flickr P1020036 by jono_misfit, on Flickr top and bottom returns P1020037 by jono_misfit, on Flickr and swagey holes :-) P1020038 by jono_misfit, on Flickr make a transfer punch P1020039 by jono_misfit, on Flickr and in situ P1020040 by jono_misfit, on Flickr fits nicely, even with my work boots on P1020042 by jono_misfit, on Flickr It still needs some fixings added to the foot rest section, but ran out of time. I can probably re-make it in aluminium and save a little weight, but does for now.

No need to remake it in aluminium, they already make a lightweight plastic version!

Mmm swagey goodness. I vote for the connect four game as well. It'll keep your passenger distracted from the cramped ride on long trips!

I suspect the roll cage tube holding the passengers shoulder at an odd angle will also help distract them from the cramped foot positioning, but I may well paint the foot rest blue for the lolz. Speaking of which, I added in some additional tabs to hold it in position. P1020043 by jono_misfit, on Flickr then contemplated muchly about what to do next. I know I said i was going to sort things then do the handbrake, but the more I thought about it the more I think i need to make the seats first. And I'm trying to put that off for a while. Plus was very full of cold and low on motivation. So decided side steps. Side steps, or at least a mock up, must be the next thing done. I know i mocked it up a while back but I wasn't really feeling it, so thought i'd try it and see again. string line giving the intended line of the outer edge P1020044 by jono_misfit, on Flickr still the string line, but a slightly different photo of it P1020045 by jono_misfit, on Flickr shows how wide it'll be P1020046 by jono_misfit, on Flickr forgot to take pics for a while... fit some angled tabs to the wings, add a straight piece of tube between then to support. then start roughly bending scrap metal to shape P1020047 by jono_misfit, on Flickr I'm attempting to run the bottom / edge of wings into the bottom of the step P1020048 by jono_misfit, on Flickr P1020049 by jono_misfit, on Flickr start piecing together, and add a couple of bolts to hold alignment P1020050 by jono_misfit, on Flickr P1020051 by jono_misfit, on Flickr fill in the gaps. Its a bit ripply due to the state of some of the off cuts used. P1020052 by jono_misfit, on Flickr P1020053 by jono_misfit, on Flickr P1020054 by jono_misfit, on Flickr P1020055 by jono_misfit, on Flickr It needs some more fettling to get the shape right at the transitions, plus will cut some holes in it so it looks a bit more like how I intend it to be, and may also give it a once over with some paint to get a better feel for it. Whats peoples thoughts? I needs a bit of depth to it as the exhaust pipe will run under the passenger side, but does it look to chunky / out of place? I also feel it needs some sort of ramp into it at the front at rear where it transitions to the wings. The angled intersections doesnt look right to me, plus at the front if I do it right it'll give the clearance for the exhaust to come through.

Two things jump out straight away on that, the first is the way it sharply goes from horizontal to the angle of the wing at the front, the looks like it should have at least a slight radius in it. The other is the very straight line of the outer edge of the board, it feels like it should pull in just a bit at the rear wing so that the radius of the rear wing protudes beyond the line of the running board. The best way I can think to describe what I mean at the back is this Beetle.

I like them, but I think I'd like if they were slightly narrower than the wings.

Whether you believe you can, or you cannot, you're probably right.

I sort of think that they're too thick, but at the moment that works for it as the work done on the wings sort of gives it a big fat pinstripe of sorts. I think once that goes due to paint, they will be a bit too thick. I think a very small radius, say 15-20mm will be more than enough to join it all together, including back in to the bodywork where the wings meet. (unsure about full length, probably not) Depends on how removable everything needs to be, I guess. As for the profile, I think straight doesn't look right, either. Introducing a slight curve through the middle, or bringing the whole board in further, and then just lipping the end where it meets the wings, could work. But I also wonder how it would look if the curve was convex and had the same line as the body? Just to throw some other ideas out there.
