Well I am back from a long day which saw me and my dad driving from Newcastle to North Wales and back, all for a Mercedes W124 estate. So thats about 670 miles between the two cars, plus the Mercedes has the rear suspension of a bouncy castle Everything seems to work, except the electric mirrors switch is missing, and there is a clunk from the front, but thats nothing when you have that three pointed star guiding the way ;D Didnt see much in the way of retroness on the way, but did spy a bright yellow bay window camper, a pale green mk2 Cortina on a lowloader (hope it wasnt stolen), but best of all was the 1960s white muscle car pulling out of a petrol station (if this was yours, you had everyone in the Little Chef staring at it). All in all, a good day out, and glad we bought it. Now to just sort out the self levelling suspension otherwise i'm going to be seasick Pics of the car from the listing, need to clean it up and get some more pics put up....

It might just be low fluid or a leak somwhere, when the spheres go that has the opposite effect.

People always seem to forget the fun and adventure involved in the collection and never 'offset' it against the actual distance and cost. Collecting my Standard involved a drive to view and put a deposit down (a 250ish mile round trip after a full day at the office), 3 hours of train journey and a meandering, motorway avoiding 180 miles home. I loved every little bit of it

Great looking car. The 220te is getting a little rare now as they were only made for 1 year. The 2.2 four cylinder isnt a bad engine really. I know the inline sixes are supposedly sublime but I have been very happy with the performance/economy ratio of mine. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy mine. I have owned newer cars, quicker cars, more expensive cars however the W124 offers something that the other stuff I have owned never could. I just enjoy the way it wafts about , feels solid and is rattle free. Yes it has its issues but I can forgive it for those. All the best.

We just did a family road trip to pick up our new, very broken, W114 coupe. About 400 miles round trip. Early start, picnic packed, three-up in the caddy. Blat down to Brighton, an hour chatting with another car nutter and a steady run back with a stop off for grub and a brew. All adds up to an enjoyable day out with the bonus of another car at the end of it! Loaded up, ready for home..... Joe.

It's almandine red, same colour used on the 190e 2.5-16's. Lovely motors to waft around in the S124's

That's one of the last pre-facelift W124's, in late 1993 they got a redesigned front end (see my sig pic, mine's a late '94) and a host of other revisions. Get used to clunks from the front end, W124's are apparently notorious for going through ARB bushes and front balljoints (mine have thankfully all been done in the last few years). parts are more reasonable than you'd think provided you're not fussy about using Genuine MB bits. Good buyer's guide here: www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/general-discussion/129223-w124-buyer-check-list.html though it's a bit late now... Bouncy rear end sounds like the rear suspension spheres being goosed. TE models use accumulator spheres on the rear similar to Citroens, only bigger/pricier (like....Citroen £15, Mercedes £150 ), once that's done you'll have a spacious mile-muncher that's not as expensive to run as you might think. Mine's a 2-litre instead of a 2.2 (think 136bhp instead of 150) but I've done over 500 miles in mine on about £80-worth of unleaded, 35mpg+ is seriously impressive for a relatively small engine in a big, hefty car with a Mong-O-Matic box. If you've got cruise control, use it....it's the key to getting decent MPG out of them, plus it's a Godsend on long journeys. All I have to do is steer, it's marvellous. ;D

It might just be low fluid or a leak somwhere, when the spheres go that has the opposite effect. Not necessarily. I had the same thing, changed the spheres and it was fine driving it to the MOT, where a rakeline fractured so I ended scrapping the car. Pig of a job to change the spheres though.
