Bit of a random post this really, but was doing a bit of Google surfing as I have just bought a Alfa 147, was seeing if I could find any tastefully modified ones.... Anyway it led onto me remembering about the alfa romeo 33 diesel which had a 3 cylinder VM diesel in it, (sadly I couldn't find any pictures of that particular engine I doubt it really fitted with the character of the car hence why there really uncommon.) Got me thinking about some of the diesel engined cars that we never got over here, mainly early 80's stuff like the mk2 polo diesel and the fiat panda 1.2 diesel (both which I have never seen in the metal, have seen pics on here of a turbocharged mk2 polo 1.3 d though) and the mk1 Opel rekord that has an impressive bonnet bulge which looks like it should house a bent v rather then an old 2.1 diesel Was just wondering if there was any interest in these odditys, and if there are any others out there that I havent mentioned [edit] fixed pictures [edit edit] first pic still isn't working for me, despite being hosted on my photobucket, might be an issue on my side tho....

Marina/Ital 1.5 diesel; used the B series diesel in non-turbo form, glacially slow acceleration but would hum along at 70mph all day at 40+mpg. I had one a geezer bought to commute to Spain in, had all the TC trim and 'comforts' and I think one other may exist here. Most were taxis in Spain and Portugal....

Went to look at a 1.6D cavalier in Birmingham in the early 90's - didn't think anything about it till I got there and it was a MK1! Never even knew they existed!

Not quite the same, but Malta is rammed with the likes of Mk1 Escorts and Itals running TD conversions!

Dunno to be honest i though my MK2 was about 60 bhp originally but a few had escaped over the 300,000 miles it had clocked by the time i got it. I never found it to be particularly slow though (at the time) and would alway return 45ish mpg

This is something I've always been nosey about, I had loads of car info-porn books growing up and they always had listings for the obscure versions and I always checked for a diesel version. The diesel Cadillacs of the late 70s always intrigued me. I know they get a terrible reputation (anyone had one?) but how bad could they really have been? I gather it was a "dieselised" version of the Oldsmobile 350ci petrol V8. With a hundred and twenty horses from that it must be one of the lowest specific outputs (horses per litre) in history.

roscocav Wow, I didn't realise there were any Mk2 Cavalier Estates still running petrol or diesel. I had one years ago and seem to remember that it used to cost me a fortune in handbrake cables. Due to the fact theat they broke all the time and were a main dealer part only.

It is indeed an Olds V8 based on the gas 350(they did have their own stronger block, though). Like a lot of engines/vehicles with bad reputations, it was put into production too quickly. It came out in '77 or '78 IIRC. They had terrible problems with head gasket sealing and fuel pumps among other things. On top of that many GM dealership mechanics didn't have much diesel experience. Many complete engines were replaced under warranty. GM kept working on the design and by '82 or so they were at least acceptably reliable, though still not a performance engine by any stretch. By then the damage was done and nobody wanted one. Too bad Olds didn't take the idea further and turbo 'em 'Course, that certainly wouldn't have helped the head gasket problem... Brian

In Europe you could get the Opel Kadett E (Mk2 Astra) with the Isuzu 1.5TD engine. Shame it never made it here.
