Beware: Footman James have (from this year) stopped doing classic car policies for under 21's...
They originally had a limit where under 25's couldn't get a policy through them (its on all of their terms and conditions online - you could have overcome this by ringing them) but now it seems they have stopped insuring anyone under 21 at all.
My sister, who is currently insured by them on a Moggie paid iirc about £500 for the year - she tried insuring my Escort (currently she's under 21) and they quote her £3800 - which will drop to £280 when she turns 21 in a month.
Check out the back of magazines such as MiniWorld, insurers usually advertise in them.

My daughter who is 17 has a 57 plate Fiesta and pays £1400 through Diamond who seem to be the best for young drivers. Stick a couple of older drivers on a policy brings it down a bit. Be very careful of some of the "free" bits you get with your insurance Ex-gf of mine was insured with Diamond (at the time they were advertising "claims paid within 2 days of your car being written off" and "includes free insurance cover for driving abroad") We took her car to Europe, it was involved in a hard crash, took Diamond 3 months to get it inspected and declare it a write-off That's 3 months with a valid policy, no transport, and not sure if we need to buy another car or if hers will be getting repaired and returned. Ask me next time you see me, I'm not sure I can think of a polite way here to explain the grief it caused

Insurance is a bit of a killer really. I agree with a couple of comments about looking at cars with larger engines etc. I've found that cars the insurance company don't expect a young driver to have work out generally cheaper, I.e. I had a 2007 registered Vectra Exclusiv 1.8i when I was 20, it was at the time a 2 year old car and I paid £60/month for it, with 1 years NCB but 3 years driving experience. I sold that and bought a clapped out P reg Astra 1.4 and it went to £97 per month. I replaced that with a Volvo V40 1.8 and it went down to £50, which is pure madness really.
Indeed my Seat Ibiza which I'm in the process of selling (2 years old, 1.6 petrol) is working out more expensive to insure than the 2005 model Volvo S60 2.0 Turbo I'm considering replacing it with. Go figure...
I'm nearly 23 with 3 years NCB btw, the Volvo is coming in at £470 for the year, I paid £640 odd for the Ibiza!
As far as insurance costs going down, I've found that it varies from year to year, although to be fair I don't think I've ever had the same car for two insurance renewals, so not a genuine comparison really!

I was with footman James for a couple of years, then realised their classic car policy didnt have a build up of no claims bonus, very annoyed that they forgot to tell me . insurance companies are always a pain in the a***. I started off with Tescos they were ok. But I'm now with Adrain flux they seem to be the best and the only company who wanted to know when I said I had a modified mk2 escort van. I hope you find someone cheaper, good luck

Classic car policies generally don't carry the ability to build NCB - they can however give you how long you have held a policy with them and notice of claims (if any) for you to forward onto your next company...

O.K. First off your a bit stumped because he's a 17 yr old male , we all know it's a rip off time I went through this nearly 2 yrs ago with "luckily" my 17 yr old daughter , I HAD to go the route of admir.. multi car to get a reasonable insurance cost of £850 on a 1998 1.2 clio in her own name , compared to £1950 elsewhere She was main driver as a learner ,me and wife named drivers incidentally the cost dropped a lot when I added the wife but didn't drop much when I was added ! I paid more and the wife did for our insurance but it was still cheaper in the long run doing it that way After she passed her test , 6 months later it cost £352 extra , I made her wait that long to take her test so she had more experience . and it was well worth the wait as she sort of had 6 months no claims . Fast forward to last october when insurance was due for renewal ,admir.. multi car was a rediculous price , something like £1569 for her as part of the 3 car deal Did a quote with admir.. for her on her own insurance and it was £1159 , £400 cheaper !! They matched the price for her , but couldn't compete with the cost for me and the wife so we went to churchi.. insurance saving £250 in total I saved £650 or there abouts BUT the disadvantage is admir.. gave the daughter 1 yrs no claims after 11 months something to do with the accelerator system they use If she goes elsewhere for insurance they won't accept her no claims of 1 yr after 11 months It could be awkward for you as you have a trader policy , but it may be the only way you can get him in a car by adding him to the trade one ,unless you want to pay an arm a leg and an eye for his own insurance he needs a group 1 car from the list below www.parkers.co.uk/cars/advice/car-insurance-groups/?ig=1 and tell him he's having one of them or nothing !! classics don't earn no claims bonus !

Go figure... This is the case with loads of stuff - it's all to do with history. Loads of young people go around crashing Ibizas, but not many go around crashing Volvo S60s. So, Ibizas end up with 'bad' insurance history for younger drivers and the companies crank the prices up as a result. That's why I always suggest looking at things like a Focus or a Mondeo if you're, say, considering a Fiesta - because it can potentially work out cheaper. Emphasis on the 'potentially', mind. Lot of other variables at play.

Cheers all. Yeah,I could put him on my trade policy for about the same money(£2000) and he can then drive anything up to 1.6 iirc but he won't be building up no claims and will get stung badly in the future. He shouldn't be stung quite as badly as you might think. If he drove like that until 21 and had proof of 4 years claim-free someone would give him a fair bit of discount if he goes out on his own. Likewise if he was on a classic policy for a while. They are getting hotter on kids driving on a parent's trade policy when they're not involved in the business though although Aviva, who I'm guessing you're with judging by the rules you've quoted, are the most flexible. Arista, for instance, are right off the idea since they got burned in the first few years of their existence when they were dead keen. Don't get too hung up on NCD - it's just a discount off the base premium. If he's been driving for a few years, even though he's not been building up NCD the base premium will be lower because underwriters will take his experience into account.

I'm going through this with no1 stepson to be. No matter what he tries to quote for, from non turbo 306 upto Volvo 940 2 litre, with sierras, mondeos, Astras, Vectras, Matiz, every classic you can imagine, Rovers, 4x4s everything.
The sum of it is, it will cost him £8k to insure anything on his own, or about £7k to insure with me at 43, and his school teacher and magistrate auntie on the policy.
He is gutted. He could run, fuel, repair and tax something small but no way could he cover the insurance costs of that level on his part time maccies job.
Mind you, I struggled to get sensible quotes this year. Everything in the months running up was 2-3 times the renewal cost, then Admiral come through with days to spare with a quote through a comparison site that was £100 cheaper than renewal.

I really feel bad for you chaps with your stupid insurance prices. When I was 17, I was driving a 2.4 litre Nissan Pintara TR.X, 3rd party property insurance cost $250 per year. Most kids drive big 6 cylinder cars (local Holdens and Fords) and wouldn't pay any more than that. When I started driving Beetles I was paying $15 per month on classic insurance (which does get NCB over here, not that it's important). My Superbug is now $13 per month for 3rd party and my Holden is $50 per month fully comprehensive. One of the major reasons why our insurance is cheap is that the 3rd party insurance for bodily injury is compulsory and included in the car registration costs (road tax). This means that it is attached to the vehicle and costs the same for everyone, regardless of age. Any other insurance is optional, so the insurance companies have to keep it reasonable, otherwise nobody would bother.
Also, for comparison, one of my mates bought a near-new Falcon XR6 on a loan when he was 17. That's a powerful car, 200kW, RWD, sports bodykit and so forth. Cost him about $2500 per year fully comprehensive. If he was clever he could have got the basic taxi-spec model, which comes with the same 200kW engine and I bet it would have been a lot cheaper on insurance!

This thread helped me out a lot. retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=usetharch&action=display&thread=98324The quotes your getting down sound bad at all to be fair, some of mine were twice that. The best one was when I passed my test at 18, we rang up my parents insurer and asked how much it would be for me to be a named driver on their diesel berlingo. Turns out, over £100k. I'm with Peter James now and they have been very helpful so far and well priced.

Gender directive comes in on 21st December. Boys premiums may therefore reduce and girls increase. Could be worth waiting to see what it's like after then.
Alternatively go for a telematics based product. Some of them like Young Marmalade (http://www.youngmarmalade.co.uk/insurance-ethos) are focused towards driver education with parent involvement in this. There's others like AA, Co-Op, Insurethebox, Coverbox, ikube and others who are doing these schemes.
