I finally got the seat out of my E24 today, it was a major ballache, but it's done now. If you look at the first pic, you can see that inside that guide, the end has been seriously battered over the last 24 years. It's been battered that much, that it's actually around 2mm out, allowing the back rest to move around a bit. There are 2 guides on each side (you can see the second guide, about 10mm further in, in the second pic), so I now need to work out the best way to rebuild that edge. Hopefully, that will then resolve the problem, as the seat will be held firmly in place, rather than having a bit to move around in. Here's some more pictures. There could be an option of putting a plate with the correctly profiled gap inside both edges, but the clearance isn't great. You can see the pin in one of the pictures above. I don't think it'll be possible to attach anything to the pin itself. The first pic is with it locked into position, the second pic shows how much of a gap there is between the pin and the guide. The top of the pin overlaps the guides too, so putting something outside wouldn't work. The pictures aren't great (iphone) but I think there might be enough clearance there to get a piece of 1mm thick steel in between the guide and the locking arm (the grey bit) on each side. I'm not sure about attaching them though, self tapping screw might work as long as it doesn't foul the locking arm. I've had the seat in my front room while I decided what to do with it, so it was a constant reminder (plus with the missus nagging me about it, i'm more likely to get on with it, lol). I decided to take it apart again, and see if I could get to the pivots and plates any easier. Well, after a bit of head scratching, I managed to get the seat to seperate some more. I don't know if i'll get it back together yet, but thats for another day, lol. So, I've built up the guides instead of the pin, it was the safest option for the seat, but the most pain in the neck for me. I also found another hole that had spread itself open more than it should, and a crack in the frame that i've repaired.. I've managed to file one side down so it's pretty much done, but my file snapped (it's only 3") so I need to get another one now  . I'm giving up for today, i'll go get another file tomorrow

It's coming along nicely, looks great after a wash - I've got similar problems with the electric seats in my E32 but at least they are solid so no MOT fail, just stuck in one position!

Fantastic work. Looks really well now and delighted you are keeping OEM. Hopefully I can be in a position to make a bid on it when you come to sell!

BTW a mate of mate has a pair of BF Goodrich tyres in 225/45 flavour I can/will vouch for. I just tried stretching them on a 9.5 and they wouldn't go, but if you're not really planning on much stretch, you should be fine. He'll be looking for about £40. They're non directional, so the worn 'inner' edge can become the outer and they've got loads of tread on what was the outside (to be the inside)
Nice work sorting the seats out, I bet that slopping was really annoying!

Thanks for the offer mate, but I think i'm going for new tyres I've just finished putting the drivers seat back together (mostly). It seems that building up the guides with welds as per the pictures above, has solved the problem. The seat back is now nice and firm. I've also just proven all of the motors by bypassing the electronics and running a 12v feed straight to the motors. They ALL work, so I just need to get a new switchbox

The BBS's now have tyres on them, 225/45 fronts, and 245/40 rears. I've also just torqued up the center bolts, i just need to put some thread lock on each bolt, and then they'll be fitted to the car. I'll update with pics when that happens (hopefully tomorrow)

Gareth came along to give me a hand, so he could put his foot on the brake while i undid the spacers. After putting the first wheel on though, it was clear that the spacer needed to go back on, the tyre was just catching the strut. The wheel was also lost in the arch, so it needed spacing out anyway. So, i refitted the spacer, effectively making the ET20 front wheel an ET0, and the rear just ET2. The rear needs dropping a bit, but i'll have to source some springs for that, so i'll probably just end up leaving it. The front tyre sidewall also looks a little too tall, they could do with being a 35 sidewall instead of the 45, but hey ho. If i have to replace the tyres again, i'll get the better profile. There isn't any rubbing though, and the front is sitting just about perfect i think On a quick test drive, i also noticed that it pulls to the left when braking, so i'll strip and clean up the brake callipers, and change the fluid at some point too, probably when i do a service on it.

So, the drivers seat saga continues. As you've seen in a previous update, i repaired the 'rocking chair' issue where the seat back when supposedly fixed in position, would move about 6 inches backwards and forwards. The repair was completed and the chair rebuilt at home. I took it down to the car today to refit it. First job was to fit the new Bosch S4 battery. Before i got the car out of the garage i wipped the old battery out, and tried to put the new battery in. It's about 10mm too big to fit in the recess. Typical. So, for now, it's resting on some cardboard to get it level. It obviously won't stay like that, i'll weld in a plate for it to sit on and be fixed to. Anyway, i connected the battery up, closed the bonnet down, and hopped in (no pics, i'm sure we've all seen a battery before ). A turn of the key, and away she went, starting almost instantly :smt003 . I drove her out of the garage, and parked her up in a bay with plenty of room for me to get the seat in. I hate that E28 seat. It's just so... wrong. It's done me a turn, admittedly, but i hate it nonetheless. When you sit on it, it's like a giant spongey spring. it's too soft, it feels like it leans too much forward (even when adjusted so it's tilted back) and you can actually see that it leans to the back left of the chair. Horrible thing. That came out easy enough, it's only 4 bolts, and being a manually adjusted seat, it slid back and forth so i could get to the bolts, and then oops, got slammed on the floor when it came out of the car. Refitting the drivers seat was a pain though, with no switch box on it, i can't easily adjust the seat forwards and backwards, i have to bridge the wires under the seat. Thats easy enough when it's off the car, but it's a PITA! when it's in there. Eventually, i got it done, and adjusted the seat so it was in a reasonable postion for me to drive the car. I suddenly had a thought about the MOT, the seat needs to adjust, or they won't pass it. Typical. I looked at the passenger side box, yeah, as i thought, thats knackered too. great. I gave westerly BMW parts a ring, and gave him the part number. £200!! for both switch boxes. :smt073 The part number for the switch boxes are... 61311374217 and 61311374003 According to realoem, these are common parts accross.. E24 635CSi Coupé, Europe E24 M635CSi Coupé, Europe E32 730i Saloon, Europe E32 730iL Saloon, Europe E32 735i Saloon, Europe E32 735iL Saloon, Europe E32 750i Saloon, Europe E32 750iL Saloon, Europe E34 520i Saloon, Europe E34 524td Saloon, Europe E34 525i Saloon, Europe E34 530i Saloon, Europe E34 535i Saloon, Europe E34 M5 3.6 Saloon, Europe These are probably early cars. So, i'm now about to spend the evening trying to locate a couple of second hand boxes. That should be fun. If i can't find any, then i'll have no choice but BMW. I can't MOT the car until they're fitted, and it's so close now i can almost touch the failure sheet :smt005 The Key is ordered, so that should arrive next week. Cars.

I had a perfect silver one of these, same year. Lovely car to look at but found the driving position with your arms pointing straight and your legs pointing towards the transmission tunnel killed my back.
It looks a little naked without the rubbing strips on the sides.
If you've not aligned the headlamps yet then most MOT testers should do the alignment for you. Particularly if you explain to them that they will need aligning because you've just changed them. They have the equipment for getting the beam right so it's logical that this would be the place to set them up.
I'm pretty sure the door mirrors should be body-colour (same as mine were) unless you have chrome everything else and then the door mirrors should be chrome.
All in all a lovely car and yours is a nice example since repaired.

I got 2 emails today, one saying the Ignition bracket is on it's way, and should be here on friday, and also another saying that the drivers side seat switch box is also on it's way from germany. I don't know how long that will take, but i'm hoping only a couple of days. Once these parts have arrived, i'll be getting them fitted to the car, and the dash rebuilt (finally), and then i'll book it in for an MOT sometime next week hopefully. I'm still waiting for the key from BMW, but i'm hoping that will arrive by the end of this week too. I also ordered a Leather dye and cleaning Kit from Bespokeleathering.com, that should also arrive sometime this week, so the interior will also get a freshen up very soon too
