So the new V6 came with a few modifications to speak of....according to the advert it had been bored out to 3.1L, had big valves, a lumpy cam and was ported and polished. Now for £300 I was guessing that most of this had been made up to get a quick sale but on inspection everything was as described! So the management system used for these engines is pretty dated now, the airflow meters espicially. They are pretty restrictive and thats not we really want with all that internal mods....! A combination of the restrictive airflow meters and the internal mods meant that the engine was running very lean at full wack so a new management system was needed! A chance for a challange and of course bugetary restrictions all pointed to Megasquirt! Now pictures: The new unit (Ex spray shop!!) You can see the airflow meters in the corner of the engine bay The original wiring was a bit of a mess! Started stripping the old wiring out My housemates old 205GTi coming to stay.... So this is how I got the Megasquirt, its an MS1 extra which I modified to use the exisitng hall sensor and ignition module mounted on the dizzy. I had to change a couople of resistors, as well a jumpint the sprak output to the correct pin..sorry no photos soem precision soldering was taking up my concentration! A wiring loom was made using modified parts of the exisiting loom, I built it so that the loom can be completely removed from the car just by unplugging 3 connectors, nice and easy! Fuse box and relay loom made Before the loom was wrapped I tested the system The interior came out (I got bored of wiring) A cheeky Mk1 came to visit... Once tested the MS and fusebox went into its new home in the glovebox Makes for easy access when tuning! Engine loom wrapped and secured

that is a sweet car! i love a cortina (had many lol)
i know a guy that v6'd a mk3 and used a mk1 capri tank in the boot on a good strong fabricated bracket up against the back seat with a bulkhead welded in to separate tank and passenger area-kept the filler in the boot and plated up the filler hole on the bodywork-looked clean! not sure if he fabricated a swirl pot in the tank but i guess you'd need one

I then wanted to start cleaning the interior as it stinks of wood (the material not the smell of a boner) best quote ever!

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

The fuel tank was sorted with a custom ally one which is mounted under the boot floor between the exhaust boxes, works pretty well but isnt very big and the rate at which this thing uses fuel i find myself stopping quite alot!

What a great car, always loved Mk3's. My dad had an estate version many years ago. It met it's end when a chimney pot was blown off a roof and hit the bonnet! That's a very cool film with your car giving it a great soundtrack

So the MS is up and running, had it on the rolling road and got a mighty 80bhp..... After some investigation i found the spark wasnt advancing, it was stuck at 10 degrees which is the limp home advance for the ford TFI ignition module. I dug around for a week or so and was convinced it was the module not talking to the MS, however after going back and checking all the mods to the ECU i found id put the wrong value resistor in so the spark out was the wrong voltage! change that and BOOM....spark advance! Back on the rolling road when I have the funds!

So Ive always like the retroness of the radio in the dash, It doesnt work but I like the look of it so have kept it in. There used to be a modern unit in the glovebox but this had to be ditched to house the new ECU so ill just have to listed to the sweet music from the exhausts now! The radio is an old LW/MW one with a row of buttons along the bottom to change the tuning, they have that brilliant old mechanical feeling when you press them, the term rifle bolt action springs to mind...I needed a push button for a little addition so a plan was forming... The radio in question: Before I took it out I didnnt know if the buttons were electrical or mechanical but I could work with either. Disassembly of the radio gave me a better idea.... The buttons are mechanical (hence that mechanical feeling!) and the layout couldnt have beem more perfect for my plan! When the buttons are pressed a plunger attached to the back of the button comes out of the mechanism into the area above the circuit board, this proves very handy... Plunger in Plunger out So after a quick trip to my favourite high street electronics store I returned armed with two 3 amp microswitches with a lever which operates the switch. a small block of wood was found and cut to size, I then screwed the wood to the circuit board and positioned the switches on the wood so when the button was pressed the plunger would activate the switch. You will probably notice that there are 2 switches, one is the engine start button, running through a relay it just replaces the switch in the ignition barrel. The second switch is more fun though......

That video with the plane is awesome, takes me back to my media studies days at college. If only we had produced anything that good! Cortina looks great and i like the radio idea, i had the same horns wired to my cigarette lighter in my Datsun 710 a few years ago.... it would go through the notes about twice before the lighter popped out

So long time no update! Things have been happening though.....First thing was the gat the megasquirt mapped. I wrote a basic map based on the engine characteristics before I even got it started which worked but needed refinement. More tuning wile driving improved it further but really a map needs to be tuned on a dyno with brake points. The map consists of engine speed vs load (amnifold pressure), the corresponding cell in the table determines the amount of fuel to be injected. A brake point dyno enables the dyno wheel speed, and so engine speed to be kept constant, therefore the load can be adjusted (by opening and closing the throttle) and the map built up cell by cell. This in mind I took it to a nie guy in MK who began the mapping Its not quiet in here...! Tweaking the fuel table.. Unfortunately we an into problem The spark advance was stuck at 10 degrees which gave a max power output of about 8 Bhp, I ad a 3 ltr micra...nice! Further investigation later revealed I had soldered the wrong value resistor when modifying the MS.....Doh! That rectified the power increase was awesome straight away! I never got round to getting the map finished but thats first on the list for next year! Next up suspension fun!

Since I bought the car the handling has been, lets say nautical....I worry about scratching the door handles on hard corners and I can make it bounce like its on hydraulics by tapping the brakes! Awesome though this is it doesn't help when you want to drive fast, so I have been on a quest to make a cortina handle properly! However before i could do this I got impatient for lows so this happened.... Looks a whole lot better, but when driving, instead of bouncing she was now making full use of the bump stops....Something must be done!
