I thought to myself, all proper race teams have a service barge, so why can't I have one? Got this the other day, 2 owners from new, and a very good price Its a Whitacres conversion, I've not seen another one like it . Electric opening side door Its really low mileage too 2.8 Turbo diesel, with a rip-snorting 100bhp Plans are to get the seats and tracking out, strip an old caravan and then work out what fits where, it will been a 2 berth, with cooker, fridge, sink and hopefully, a loo and finally sticker up to match the Volvo.

That's a very cool purchase. What will the Air Training Corps do without their bus though? There's one a bit like this that parks up near us a couple of times a month. All blacked out windows and obviously a bit of a stealth camper. Always look at it and think what a good base a bus would make for a camper. What sort of mpg will it do?

Cheers The ATC bought a bigger one, they had this one for 4 years, and only done 4,000 miles in it. From what I have read, it will do 30ish mpg on a run, not bad for something that weights nearly 3 tonnes.

We had a well-used and abused ex-Notts Police Dog Unit Iveco the same size when the team started rallying, cracking old bus if you keep on top of the bodywork (the previous owner hadn't, which is why it went to the big Dog Pound in the sky in the end).
Those engines are marvellous, ours used to run with an XE-powered Sunbeam on a hefty trailer, 8 people, a couple of dozen wheels and tyres, a full toolkit and half a dozen jerrycans of fuel and would sit on the motorway at 65-70 all day no bother. I'd say that in terms of outright pulling-power it was easily the equal of the 312 Sprinter we've got now.
Nice to drive, and handle well for a big van too.

I can believe that, I know this one can tow 3 tonnes, and thats with it loaded at 3.5tonnes!
I'm looking forward to getting the conversion started, just waiting for 2 bits of welding.

You should get a few quid back by selling the seats on ebay as well. Keep the tracking to sell as well if that is how the seats fit.

I will be selling all the seating and tracking, then carpeting the bedroom area, and leaving the anti-slip in the kitchen

Let me know about the seats. I'd be interested!
I had the 35s11 with the 2.8, was one of the first of the next shape, mechanically was built like a truck but the electrics were curse word!
Had it doing about 32mpg full of band and gear.
Totally underated van the turbodaily is.

A small update, just to prove I'm still working on it! Kitchen layout, complete with new vinyl flooring. (It will be cleaned at a later date) Cooker is nearest the door, fridge facing the door Water heater vent fitted Water heater fitted in cupboard behind the drivers seat and pipework running under the van.

I used to drive one of these as a courier van about 8 years ago. It was extremely rapid and could easily spin the double rear wheels. They put me into one of the newer ones though and it was nowhere near as good as the old 2.8 engine. Good luck with it - definately an excellent base for a camper.
