My one is different to that quad. Laid out similarly but my fuel line goes in different, and my choke assembly is different.
Still out of country for now, but I will try the vacuum leak hunt once I'm back. Can't use the wd40 trick as it dies below 2k. Will check all places for leaks first then attempt the idle screw. Can anyone point out *exactly* where this is so I don't go jiggering the carb?

Been pondering this for a while. Unless I have a vacuum leak on the carb itself (not ruling it out but unlikely as I haven't tampered with any ports on it) the only leak paths I can think of are manifold to heads. Here there is a new manifold to old heads, but heads were cleaned up and new gaskets used for installing the Performer. The other, more likely path is the carb to manifold. My Performer is a unilug design that can accommodate both bolt patterns for Holley and Rochester. However I recal now I reused the old and frankly appalling carb gasket on the new manifold.
Decided to get myself a new Rochester gasket. Also picked up a cheeky Holley gasket to allow me to fit the monster holley DP I have in the background. So at least I can give that one a whirl and see if it works.
Back in 2 weeks so will try it then and see if it works...

Hi
I read your first post and scanned through the answers - I did not read all of them completely.
You say you have broken the engine in and now it won't idle, instead it will stall. As a kid, I worked in an IT help line. Whenever the customer would say "my computer is totally dead" the first question you need to ask is "is the power cord unplugged"?
So now I have to ask: "do you have a flywheel bolted to the rear of the crank? Or a torque converter+auto transmission filled with ATF?"
Because if the answer is "no", it won't idle - even though the V8 fires every 90 degrees of crank rotation, you need that rotating mass to overcome the compression stroke.

Ha, no harn in checking the obvious! But yes, full drivetrain to wheels is totally connected.
Good logic though!

Moving in to the realms of unlikely did you check the manifold fits flush against the heads?

I did take a lot of care with that, but naturally i cant rule it out.
feel like i have been out the country for years now. Itching to get back and run some diagnosis on this beast and get her running properly! Will report back with my findings once i do!

one other bit i just thought of did you use the cork valley gasket when you fitted the inlet as using this can sometimes cause a leak edelbrock suggest using a bead of sealer where the cork gaskets go instead also there are chevys with different head angles think its 18 and 23 degree heads

Interesting. I used rubber ones but that is one to look for as well.

Found it. Had a couple of vacuum leaks as predicted.
Still think the idle is a bit on the high side but thats only by ear test. Will get the revometer hooked up to confirm it.
