I have 2 questions bothering me... 1 ) Its quite common that if you have fully comprehensive insurance cover on your car(s), then you are covered to drive drive any car (with owners permission) on third party basis. Does the 3rd party cover still work where the car you "borrow/drive" is covered under the owners trade policy( i.e its not separetely insured but covered under the general trade policy?? 2) Are there any "classic car "insurance policies which also insure the driver to drive other cars on 3rd party basis?

check that your fully comp still covers you for driving other cars.
some companies have removed it from the policy now to drive price down

Be careful with this, it catches a lot of people out. I know for a fact my fully comp doesn't cover me on anyone else's car at all. Yours might, but you're best to check with them - its only a few minutes on the phone.
One thing that catches people is that the car normally has to be owned and insured by someone else. I guess the idea is to stop you insuring one car and running 10 off the one policy. I don't know if that's what you were suggesting in your second question?
In relation to the first question - where trade ownership and insurance fits into the above, I don't know...

I'm insured with HIC and I have drive any other car Is your policy with HIC a classic policy? Agreed value, limited mileage, garaged when not in use etc or just a normal policy that covers your ride?

Give them a call, it seems to be different for every policy, never mind company. If they're a big name, they'll be listed on www.saynoto0870.com/ which can save you from premium rate numbers by getting in their back door

It's hit and miss my fully comp policy on the BMW doesnt cover me but the 3pft policy on my polo does!
I would think that as long as the car you are driving isnt in your name and has some form of insurance on it, you should be ok - I would check with your insurance comp though.

Always check. On my Polo policy I'm covered to drive other cars with the owner's permission, but on the Princess policy I'm not.

I've just had a look through my policy on the Princess and it raises an odd question of my own. On the phone, I was told I had to have a second car insured and owned by myself (which I do) to qualify for the classic policy. However, I can't find any reference to this in the paperwork.
Does that mean I do or don't need to have another car owned and insured by myself?
I also note that the car has to be garaged at home between 10pm and 6am as any damage or theft during these hours if the car isn't garaged isn't covered... and I can see that being an issue occasionally because doesn't that mean when I've driven the car after 10pm I've technically been doing so without insurance?
These are questions I should probably pose to my insurer.

Quite often the car doesn't have to be insured either, just not owned by you. But guess now the new tax/insurance law is in place this situation won't arise very often.

1. it is illegal for one car to be covered by two policies. This goes back to the days of the Cornish wreckers who used to take out like 10 policies on one ship then run it aground to claim the profits... However so long as you are only third party so in theory you should ensure any other policies on the car are not in force to cover you to drive. However with the "third party extension" there is probably some legalese which says that if you are already covered by the existing policy that the third party extension is no in force. If that makes sense.
I am with Peter James and they do not require any insurance in place on the car in the owner's name.
2. I am insured with Peter James Insurance on classic policy and they give the third party extension to other cars
be aware there may be all manner of restrictions so before you drive on the third party extension either read the small print or phone to check you are covered in the specific situation you have. There is no legal definition for what is or isn't included on insurance over and above statutory road risks cover for a specified driver & vehicle so its down to the fine print in the policy what YOUR policy covers

Ifs, buts, maybe and guesswork.
The ONLY person who can answer YOUR insurance questions is YOUR OWN insurer. Policies vary so much that nobody else can give you a reliable answer. What applies to one person does not necessarily apply to someone else even if they have the same insurance company. Bear in mind that most "Insurance companies" are just brokers, and the actual insurers are generally companies you have never heard of - It is entirely possible for two people living on the same street who have called the same telephone number for insurance will end up being insured by two different underwriters who have completely different policy conditions.

I am with Peter James and they do not require any insurance in place on the car in the owner's name. Since the law change you can't have road tax on an uninsured car so although you might have cover for other peoples cars they will either have to be insured or SORN / off the road. Catch 22 ? Paul H

They don't care either way so I don't think that makes a difference.
Like Dave says, call and ask is the answer really. Thats what I did so I can tell you what is in place for me on my policy...
