I don't do diesels. I drive petrol cars. Yes, they use more fuel but, meh. I drive what I like. My ex-wife is selling her turbo Saab convertible to get a Micra or some such because of the Saab's high fuel consumption. But she does 30-40 miles a week! She could run a Rolls Royce or an Escalade and the actual extra fuel cost would be negligible. If you are doing 100 miles a day or something then you probably need to be looking for every mile per gallon. I'd rather drive less and do so in a car I liked. Too true. I see many people do this! One friend of mine paid top money for a Focus TDCi to cover how many miles a year? 4-6000 a year... However, I reckon around 200 miles a week is slowly becoming the break even point especially if you travel in Europe where diesel is much cheaper than petrol. Saying that, that Stag's current thirst does make me wince (I probably cover around 50 miles in that a week (or double that if going to a show etc.). Still, it is alot easier (and well, more fun) to drive than a derv .

Just filled up again today £20 = 14.30 litres. And changed the thermostat(in the rain). I'll see what that does to the fuel consumption. But i now have a steady 90 degrees on the temp guage and a much smoother and responsive engine so i'm much happier. On the down side i did find a split CV joint gaiter . I'm now looking to bike to work as i live embarasingly close to work so that will save me some fuel. A lot of people go on about if you do too few miles to justify a diesel it not worth having one, but to me if you for example do 5000 miles a year in petrol and then 5000 in a diesel it would be cheaper in the diesel would it not? I know it costs more to service etc but its still a saving surely. I service and repair my own cars and so it wouldnt make much differance to me. For example i could do the air and oil filter and oil on my 306 HDi for £26 if i got the filters from Peugeot and the oil from Halfords to do the same on my Renault 172 was nearly £60. granted theres a time differance with regards to inflation in price. I've worked out that i've done nearly 11k miles already since buying the Audi last june. My Wife wants us to get a new car ASAP, so we've narrowed it down to a Citroen C4 1.6 HDi auto or a SAAB 9-3 tiD Auto. Thats for the Daily duties but for me i'm thinking of building a Vauxhall nova with a Isuzu 1.7 td from an astra or cavalier, which hope will be fast and frugal ;D

I'd also consider servicing and maintenance. If you don't do enough miles to get a diesel warmed up it will get clogged up. My Doblo ran great for years when I did longer journeys than I do now. It hardly gets warmed up anymore and the EGR was causing problems. If you get a newer diesel it will also have problems with the particulate filter if you don't warm it up. However diesel is a lubricant so the engine is protected from start up reducing wear.
I now run a petrol (MG ZS120) and get 34mpg. To be honest there wouldn't be much savings i running a diesel for me (about 80 miles a week).
Look at tax as well diesels can be 'cleaner' in terms of CO so are lower tax if post 2001.
Lots to consider but then again when does common sense come into choosing a car ;D

I admit if you have a modern there is more than just the fuel saving to look at. When I had my Alfa 147 JTD a 1.6 cost more to insure (to the tune of almost £300 more) in addition to costing over £100 more on road tax. Add to servicing costs to that (cambelt changes are not cheap, requiring special tools, and that's before you hit having to change 8 platinum spark plugs...). The initial cheapness of the 1.6 soon became a distant memory. It is easy to see why classics can be dailies .
