Hello all, I currantly drive a Golf GTI, which I love, but the thing that gets me down the most at the moment... is that its FWD. A freind has a hillman imp, and I just love the way you can stick the backend out when ever you like (on private ground course ) So.. apart from a Hillman Imp, whats a cheap RWD car that will be cheapish to insure, but still be fun? Thought about beetle's, would have a budget of about 1000 pounds so doubt I could get a reasonably straight one shell wise for that. Thanks ;D

Toyota Starlet KP60? Chevette? Toyota Corolla KE70?
Surely none of those are too expensive, unsure on the insurance thing but they're cheap over here!

Definately a Toyota Corolla or Starlet, or a Datsun/Nissan Sunny.

I'll second that Mr.Pog....My 136 Rapid Coupe was probably the most fun I've had on four wheels.... Or, if You fancy going a bit more butch....Ford Capri Mk111 2.0, or preferably 2.8 injection....Also great fun, and good looking IMO....Insurance on the 2.8 would depend on Your age/record....Cheap enough for an old fart like me nowadays! ;D

Depends whether you want something to replace the Golf as a daily driver, or a second "fun" car....
My picks:
HC Viva - cheap and fairly easy to drive, and great for doing Gerry Marshall impressions even when you're not expecting too. mk1/2 Escort 4-door. Buy now while stocks last! Chevette. And of course - Sierras! They're cheap, some are quite fast, and they're excellent for getting the hang of oversteer without writing off an expensive Escort / Imp / Capri etc.... Once you've mastered it, then get something more fun!

I think everyone has the right idea - unless you are very lucky any £1k bug is going to be a dirty seventies snotter with no real advantages. Mk1 Escort 4 door FTW, or indeed any of the other options above. What about an E30 3 series? Or its predecessor if you can find one?

My lancer which just so happens to be for sale in the for sale section! SORRY! shameless self promotion :-)
One main reason I'm selling it is because the back end comes out easily not being a sissy just when you end up upside down in an soft top mg I kind of want to get away from rear wheel dive!
But I would never give up on my imps!!! :-)
Cheers Chris

Can you really get a Mk1 Escort 4-dr for under a grand?!?! I thought the prices had all sky-rocketed. Wow.
A BMW e30 should provide some tail-happy fun, and I'm sure £1k would get you a decent 318i. Ar$e-out motoring galore with a Skoda Estelle / Rapid. They're getting rare but are well within your budget!

Another Gerry Marshall type: Tatty Dolly Sprint (well, sound but requiring cosmetics) or a nice 1850HL - good, torquey lumps, lots of tuning bits and bobs, plenty of gusto, look good, exceedingly comfy, with superior interiors and dynamics to the Ford equivalents and so on! Cheap and easy to keep running too. And quite lively ;D Used to enjoy drifting the white one around Milton Keynes, especially in the wet!

Totally forgot about the Volvo's, had thoughts about mk1/mk2 escorts but I'm guessing finding a decent shell for under a grand would still be a mission? Really would like a Dolly Sprint, I'm not shy of mechanical work, its just rust that I don't like, I can weld, I just hate welding anything other than Land Rover chassis's, beacuse you can flip them over!! E30 Bimmer.. I'm liking the sound of that, time to hit the auto trader and have a go out in one. Its to replace the golf, next year sometime I would guess, I don't know really if something hits me that I like... who knows what can happen Thanks!
