I've done both venues over the years, but both are about 4 hours drive away. Big on time and fuel costs, throw in overnight stay and it mounts up. Camping not always an option if family in tow or back is playing up.
8 hours driving in the one day tends to take its toll, so a stop over is normally needed. And if the event is on a Sunday, that eats into Monday, meaning using a days holiday/losing pay.
Just me whinging on, I know, but I'm not alone in this. Fellow Petrolheads of the south, you are blessed!

NASC have a show at draton manor theme park coming up next month huge show with a good cross section of cars . Getting there! hehe About 160ish miles away each way. Thats approx £60 fuel, plus entry fees, plus spends, an easy £100 day out. If I lived in say, Surrey, there would be 1or2 meets/events each week or so, within 20/30miles and cost free or not a lot to get in. See the difference? Shame isn't it? I know my venting wont change it, but a guy can vent surely? |

Can you name some of these big weekly events we apparently have down here? Genuinely interested, I'd like to go to them.

I'm not saying BIG weekly events, more events in general that if you're into your metal, would be of interest.
Kind of events etc we have here that are attended but are held rarely, for example....
Hot Rod night meet
Autojumble
Hillclimb
Rallycross
Club run-out
Classic meet
Touring Cars
A bit random, but a cross section of what a Petrolhead (to use a name) might want to attend/take part in.
The above happen few and far between up here in comparison. Just scanning across annual 'events lists' both online and in the monthlys, theres a count of about 6 'southern' events a month for everyone in the northern regions.
As said, these are not Big shows, more events,meets,drives,gatherings etc.

OK, again, name them. Genuinely interested. Brands Hatch, dozens of races and events a year (Touring Cars twice a season) and Thruxton, again, plenty of events all year.. Goodwood festivals and race days/track meets, Brighton Speed Trials, Beaulieu is nearby and holds plenty through the year. Upcoming Car Fest at Laverstock Park, Ace Cafe meets and any similar to it, Run To The Sun,Crystal Palace, Bromley Pageant...... They are off the top of my head, add to them any weekly/monthly meets by smaller car clubs, local rallies/12 cars, autotests and sprints, autojumbles, cafe meets etc.... The north really is a poor relation (oh, in so many ways). |

I don't care where meets are, they're my equivalent of a Friday night out on the lash. I'd far rather be taking pictures of cars than wasting my money on curse word booze and listening to 'music' at extortionate prices.
My own hurdle is money, I wish I had more of it! If I could reliably put petrol in the tank at the drop of a hat I'd be off all over the country. I've got a shortlist of places I want to go and see stuff happening and none of it is on my doorstep and I'm absolutely fine with that.
A big part of the old car hobby for me is the people and getting to drive to new and interesting places as much as it is the cars themselves. I love to explore the UK, it's such a wonderful country whatever the naysayers may grumble on about.
So when I have the petrol money to do it I'll be off for the RR Scotland meet that was being planned, a trip down Bristol way (if they'll have me!), a couple of events over in Lincolnshire, a trip to Wales just for the hell of it and quite possibly a trek down to the Ace Cafe.
My cars do 25-40mpg depending which one I take and what roads I go on and, if I save up, I can have a fun day out even if the weather is rubbish and nobody turns up because I'm in my car exploring this green and pleasant land and that's enough for me.

Exactly the same as me, in all respects pretty much :-) Would just be nice for those times when money is tighter, not saved up (50 weeks of the year then!) to have stuff reasonably local (+-50miles) to do, as seems to be the case 'darn sarf'. |

The Steel City Cruisers show has always been my favourite, rock up on the Friday evening, pie and peas included in the entry, couple of nights of general drunken buffoonery with a cruise out Saturday lunch time, then a relaxed but busy show day. Top class and really cheap.

Touring cars at Brands and Thruxton. You get races at Oulton Park and Croft. Hillclimbing at Harewood. Theres a round of the Rally Cross championship at Croft as well. Practical Classics is full of events up and down the country and I would bet my right arm and the car that it steers that you have a local motorclub and classic car clubs too. Its just a matter of hunting these things out. I was on holiday in Scotland a few years ago and found a couple of classic car shows during the fortnight I was up there. It just takes some digging to find them  |

Thanks for your input, I'm allowed a whinge, as much as the next guy. I do my research, thanks. Croft is minutes away, and I go, but they have very few events due to recent legal wrangling. Oulton and others are all 150+miles away for touring cars etc. Harewood, again, I go too, 40mins run each way and a good day out, due to work etc, I go to 2 or 3 meets a season. We do have local motor clubs. Sees us having 2 or 3 rallies a year and a couple of Autotests. Then a few race meets at Croft. Scanned the likes of Practical Classics etc, and as I did say, we do have events/meets, just a very small number in comparison. Sorry for rattling your cage with my ramblings, but it seems that a few at least on here agree. The North is not bereft of events, just a great deal less, and that is all I have said. |

Croft has 11 meets a year, same as Castle Combe which at 70 miles is the closest to me (actually I'm in the middle of a Silverstone, Combe, Brands triangle) and one of those meets is BTCC. This seems abit of a non rant tbh. Its not like you're in the Shetland Isles with nothing at all.
There must be a good number of RRers up that way. Try and organise a meeting. Once a month, somewhere central with food/drink and ample parking and see where it goes. Stick to the same day (1st sunday or something) and it'll grow if people want it to.
