I was just doing some B&Q shopping (for modding my Datsun... which TBH looked out of place in the car park as well ;D) and on the way out I spotted this and had to stop for some pics.......... Not sure whats going on with the rear number plates though?? Maybe a spare for towing?? I thought it was a Citroen DS Safari but have been told its an even rarer ID?? (I have noticed the difference in Headlights but just thought it was an age difference!)

The dual rear number plates are so that there is one showing backwards when the tailgate is open when carrying a long load. ID/DS is a spec difference I think, rather than necessarily age related.

ID/DS is a spec difference I think, rather than necessarily age related. Yes, the ID was a cheaper variant; initially it shared the DS body but with less power from the same-sized engine (69bhp vs. 75bhp), and the gap widened between the two over the years, with the ID offering a more basic spec list - conventional clutch/gearbox, no power steering etc - making it around 25% cheaper. Both names are almost puns, incidentally - DS is pronounced 'Déesse', meaning 'goddess', while ID is pronounced 'Idée', meaning 'idea'.

I must say I'm not too keen on the sedan version but the estate is lovely, it looks so huge inside ! I admire that rear plate trick, I get why you guys think french cars are quirky

Minis used to have hinged number plates on the boot lid so they swung down for load carrying, as did my old Marina pickup truck.
Nice find by the way, I love it when you spot these things out and about at random.

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

Was it even cleverer of Rootes to mount the rear plate below the bumper on the estates like mine so that they avoided this problem all together?

a towbar, Seth... ;D I'll have my cake and eat it then The read end 'styling' of these Safaris does bother me a bit because its as though they just gave up. That bumper is just a chrome plated girder with open ends. The rear wings leave that awkward shape that is filled by the black (rubber) overider thing that doesn't really 'fit' with the taillights which themselves are really rather cool.

my dad was ferried about in a DS estate across europe and england when he was a lad. Got destroyed in an incident with a lorry carrying bricks, a shifting load, and a tight corner I believe

I saw one of these the other day, looked rough as hell but only 1 month out of ticket so wouldn't take much to get back on the road. For sale I think..

only 1 month out of ticket so wouldn't take much to get back on the road. You are assuming that a) it didn't just scrape through it's last test and b) the last test was legit. Not to mention the fact that these hide rust really rather well.
