Chaps
A friend stuck petrol into his diesel car Is it a massive problem this way round? or should he just dilute it with diesel and just run it through?
Cheers

I believe its a bad idea and needs draining down properly (and the mixture throwing away ), older diesel engines might be less fussed but I think none of them will be that happy if the get a full shot of petrol. Rob

My Visa D ran fine after a 1/4 tank of petrol was diluted down with the tank brimmed with diesel. It almost felt like it actually made it faster. Not as fast as the rust that was ravaging it though.

+1, doesel in a petrol isnt the end of the world (you can actually make a pretol engine run in diesel with a fair bit of fettling) but petrol in a diesel is a bad idea and can lead to some light seeking con rods. may be fine heavily diluted, but i cant comment on that.

A friend stuck petrol into his diesel car Depends on the car mate, if its an older vehicle (indirect injection or early Di with an old skool "propper" injection pump) then it'll be fine as long as its not more than about 25 to 30% petrol in with the derv. Too much petrol causes vapor locks so may struggle and cut out. IF its a newer vehicle (common rail high pressure style) it'll possbily damage the pump or huff some sort of electrical gizmo. Older diesels handbooks (bmws/some vws) actually say upto 30% petrol is acceptable, people in colder climates drop petrol in to diesel vechicles constantly, helps keep the diesel from gelling. I've put 10% petrol in my diesel vehicles when running on veg oil in winter - to keep it thin enough as to not damage the injection pump. i'f hes gonna drain it and throw it away - someone on the vegetableoildiesel forum will buy it off him

Saw one of these vans doing it's thing in my local petrol station the other day. Probably not cheap, but better than an engine rebuild. www.drfuel.co.uk

As wez say really, as there's no such thing as a generic engine we really need more info (like what car it is would help!) to give a half decent answer

An '07 plate diesel engine in ANYTHING is buried in so many additional devices to make it more civilised it's barely a diesel anymore ...... your mate needs to drain it completely, blow through the fuel lines, brim it with diesel and fill the fuel filter with diesel as well.
How much of an engine rebuild can you get for the £70 the petrol cost him ?

not worth the hassle of running it with a lot of petrol in, too new a vehicle. if it was a tenners worth of petrol then brimmed off with diesel I reckon it'd be ok and i'd prob risk it... but much more petrol than that i'd drain the lot.

That's a diesel nozzle which wont fit in a petrol tank filler, not a very good pic for a misfuel specialist really

Your friend wants one of these. In no way embarrassing or irritating.

1989 Peugeot 205. You know, the one that was parked in a ditch on the campsite at RRG'17... the glass is always full. but the ratio of air to water may vary.

Even though the nozzle wouldn't fit and it was pouring down the side of the car, she was still trying. They are out there
