At first this looked off topic but its not. trying to get a job and doing the right things are vital, ask me i know! , a string of offputting 'life' events, lack of media jobs, and not 100% CV/application/lieing skillorz, has prevented me burning up the ladder like a crazed screeeming hillclimber. - Find the company you want to work for, or the opportunity, papers, net etc. - You need to know what 'they want'. Then tell em you have it (presuming you do). - failing all that, and you want to work, think outside the box a bit: * Offer to work casual self employed for back street garages who do the odd interesting work. my man is always too busy, and working late. * Offer to fix/help restore others cars for a very fair rate ~(on a 'self employment' basis), just look at the unfinished projects on here. most of the time thats cos of cash, but not always...

It's just as hard if not harder on the other side of the fence. Actually getting job messages out to the right people is a nightmare. Agencies don't care about the quality of people they send through and I cannot believe the standard of some peoples CV's.

a bit, but it is interesting to see/hear about forum members experiences in the auto related industries (my post to mb was obviously not even related in this way - sorry).

A friend of mine got into the car industry via doing his Mechanical Engineering degree at Loughborough university, even then the interview process was -very- tough and long winded.

i wouldnt email garages: alot of people don't have the time to look at emails and besides it probably is just the secretary who looks at em... i would write to the manager/propietor asking for a period of unpaid work experience
I wrote to my present employer and got an interview, just by being keen in the letter( if you mention your love of engineering, cars, willingness to learn etc) I'm sure someone will invite ya over.... and as soon as you have a foot in the door your practically there!

redundant, twice in 3 months, after 5 years solid work. Been out for 1 1/2 months now and only managed 6 interviews, despite sending out approx 100 job applications. problem is, I'm a job taught, industry experienced 10 years in the biz Web developer. In that situation, you don't get time for additional book learning. You learn and research what you need to do the task in hand, and no more. But just before I got laid off the second time, the degree results were out. So suddenly, there are a bunch of kids, with more skills, some with sideline work experience, and willing to work cheaper because they are "first jobbing". WTF chance does someone, nearing 40, starting to go grey and needing enough to meet a mortgage stand, when up against a spotty oik who works for enough to pay rent on a bedsit and enough nights on the lash that they can come in bragging about their hangovers. I guess I might just be too old for the industry I've been in. Sickened. Thing is, the only other jobs I know really well is supermarket shelf stacking, and working the counter in a bookies. I stopped sweating my balderdash off for minimum wage when I was 20, and being spat at, sworn at and curse word on (when not being robbed) by the regulars lost it's charm when I didn't need the money to top up the student grant. what web dev skillz do you have meatball. Can't promise owt but we do have the odd web project from time to time and it's always nice to know? PHP/MySQL/Some PERL Ironically, after my rant earlier, I seem to have gotten a Job. More travelling than I would like (Warrington, to Blackburn and back every day), he hasn't mentioned salary yet, and I'm still waiting for it in writing, but a call today was an offer. I went for an interview last week. It seemed to go OK, but he wanted a programming test. So I went yesterday to the office, and instead of being given a problem, expected to code a solution on the PC and then see if the results match what is expected, there were 5 3page exam paper types. Each one on a different subject. PHP, MySQL, Networking, ASP/ASP.net and MSSQL My handwriting is terrible since I've been using computers. So that didn't help. I know very little ASP, went blank on the PHP, answered more on the MSSQL paper than on the MySQL paper, even though I've never really used MSSQL, and had to leave the whole Cisco section of the networking paper, becuase I've never updated or configured IOS before. I figured I had really blown it, but apparently, yes I did curse word, but tried and was in the right area with my answers, and apparently I'm of the right mindset to fit the team and improve.

But on the auto trade/classics/restoration side of things, I imagine it is a lot like the radio/tv stuff. You start sweeping up, making tea, cleaning or polishing the cars. Eventually you get to pass the spanners with one had, polish a car with the other and sweep the floor with a broom stuck up your...(you get the picture). If you can do all that without screaming and running away, you get to help and they look for a new sweeper up.

Funny that was me 6 years ago, no job and a busted Capri sat outside my house. I just bit the bullet and went and did the call centre sketch for a bit (Yorkshire Evening post, private used car adverts over the phone!). You`ll feel better once you get that £900 going in your bank every month and you can fix the Capri, sell the Daewoo and keep an eye out for something else while getting a regular wage. Not a particularily inspiring or inventive solution but easy to put into practice and it`ll sort things out short term - remember, the important thing here is getting that Capri fixed!

too early to give up lad, in saying that i got the first job i applied for, then again, it was in a spar shop. 6 months down the line, i handed in my notice, stayed, and got promoted and pay rise so now I'm assitant manager of the off-licence attached... so that was sickening, spot random job ad on modified car forum, app. form, interview, job offer within 2days, moved to halfords (step into automotiveness) with immediate training for supervisor position, of course, that fell through outside my control, so now I'm back to shop oik... so, that was sickening. spotted ad for local car dealer parts advisor (oik), applied, wrote cv and app form within 4 days, went for interview and got handed job on the spot before anyone else got interviewed cuz the CV was "brilliant" so now I'm sickened by that. not a bad job but really, £5.25ph doesnt make any skoda love happen often but anyway lad, the aim of that is to say that its all chance and preparation once you get the chance... id still be at spar or tescos if it wasnt for a random ad and a well CV (3 hours work!) I'm gonna start that writing to interesting people around here too. thing is, whos going to hire me now when all my supervisory skills were brought back down to zilch??

I was in a similar situation recently enough.
I stupidly didnt apply for any graduate jobs as I thought I'd be away (my car ate all my australia money), so I was stuck with a Mechanical engineering degree and no job at the end of the summer.
My old man wanted me to hold out for an engineering job, but the old pride was taking a hit constantly taking money from him, so I sent the word around my friends. A friend of mine knew of a driving job going in his place. Now I drive around a landcruiser delivering and maintaining LED signs and it's good craic and gets me a fairly decent wage until the graduate jobs start next September.
Basically (sorry for the rambling) - don't give up hope, send the word around your mates, check every paper and internet job site and you'll find something.
Are you willing to move away? considered uni?

Agencies are a mixed bunch. Some are fantastic, most are useless.
I've never been out of work - but I work in retail, so there's loads of jobs out there.
Some may laugh and look down on careers in retail, but it's not stupidly hard work and management positions can pay really good money - you can pull in £60k / year + company car as General Manager in a large Tesco / Sainsburys.
It's also something that rewards hard workers quite quickly - I started off flogging trainers part time whilst at Uni, left Uni without finishing the course and was a store manager in a small-ish traveller market within 12 months.
What I'd say is don't rule it out if other avenues come to nothing.

don't worry about getting knocked back either, just get back up and carry on the good fight.i've had some that were so stupid its unbeliveable. i applied for a car salesmans job and got declined as i dodn't have enough motor trade experience (12years ! how much more do you want?) i was too old to be an apprentice mechanic,i'd applied for a parts advisors job,and had sent in a full c.v. and covering letter.the guy even had the nerve to call ME a timewaster, even though he admitted to not having read the cv or letter. being told i was over qualified to be a train driver and promptly being offered a train cleaning job!

Try local supermarkets, factories, warehouses etc. I'm sure they will have something available. Theres always jobs about. I have had a few really dull jobs but they pay the bills.
