Yay! Sorting out Fifth Gear FTW! Sorry to say that I don't like Tom Ford all that much and the previous couple of series have very much looked like they were trying to copy TG lock, stock and (let's scrap something!) barrell. Glad to hear that new thinking is occurring! TG is starting to look curse word so you certainly don't want to copy it!
For on-screen chemistry and fun, take a leaf out of the Gadget Show's book. They tend to be on before 5th Gear but I really enjoy their show, even though I don't like technology! (Perhaps Suzi Perry has something to about it too...)

On a side note I watched 'Vroom, vroom' on one of the curse word digital channels the other day and they were doing some wibblepoo world cup style thing with cars. Over the run of the series it looks like they are gonna wreck a Rover P6 , Mitsubishi Starion (which the presenter called a Toyota ... TAWT ! ) , Datsun Sunny Saloon , Porsche 924 , VW Beetle , VW Golf Mk1 , Jaguar XJ6 and numerous other retro stuff which they see as worthless but people on here would love to own .
Yeah I been following that, some of the cars but not all got wrecked but inevitably they would have been scrapped after their use. Begs the question though, its likely that these cars were unwanted in the first place. I'm guessing that those cars were acquired fair and square - not everyone wants to save a mot failure Datsun sunny - and I should know!

Aye, some of the cars will be "unwanted" but some will be just bought off eBay or local paper whatever and someone else may hae been in there with the bidding.
Still, whats you properly - you can do with what you will - same as with banger racing really.
But its the same deal as when you are watching Prison Break and you see Micheal Schofield drive awayin a 1963 Rambler you know its going to get destroyed. And of course it does.
Any classic in a movie or TV show is there to get wrecked.
OK yeah, they do wreck a lot of modern stuff and we don't really notice that.
Classics are more "eye catching" though.
Also if they bought a load of 4 or 5 year old Mondeos to wreck then Mondeo man will be afronted that his car is considered junk, and he is their target audience not us.

Slighty of topic but it is nice to see media type people on here looking for feedback or ideas. I'm a firm believer that constructive coments will always be listened to even if "we" aren't their target audience Now if we can just get Will Holman on here I'd like to tak about the comments in the back of PPC mag regarding Opel Monza's - talk about not even bothering to look around before writing some complete rubbish!!! I may be slightly biased in the comments above

Aye, I know what you mean. Odd place, often seeming more interested in perpetuating in-jokes about biscuits than anything actually to do with cars...

I still brouse it occasionally (call it research) and whilst I continued to update my Monza thread for a while I can't say I found any friends - unlike here (I hope!!)

Nice to see Jonny on here, loved his merc in one of the epidodes and his trip to ferrari was class. Dude you looked so uncomforable singing Happy Birthday, hats off to you though I wouldn't have done it.
I'm looking forward to the next series. It's a bit more down to earth than TG and features cars I could actually get a go in. VBH is a chuckle if not the worlds best presenter, Tom Ford makes me laugh, Tiff has been an idle of mine since back in the early days of TG when Tony Mason et al where on it.
Also I love the fact it's in the ace. That place does the best fry ups and cups of tea in the whole world!

Happy birthday was cringeworthy but funny. Not often I say that as I hate cringeworthy comedy!

Nick Can agree I'm afraid Personally I find VBH more irritating than a boil on me bum, Tom Ford is a bubbling bafoon and Tiff bores the pants of me ooo look I can slide the rear end out again and again and again - yawn The show looks and feels like a poor copy of TG which is a shame as TV really needs a decent car program that is not TG, even the name is a rip off of TG

Interesting to see this thread alive again. I probably said summat harsh before. But after applying for production post a couple of years ago, and having to submit 3 ideas to Jon Bentley of all recruitment people, I was horrifed to see some of my ideas used while I got no reply from FG . FG went down in my extimations since then, and so did the TV industry. It was cringeworthy and annoying and thats not just cos of what happened above. i'll admit it was interesting in bits sometimes. I'm a nice guy, It will be good for the people if it gets better. and echo what BC (or whoever) said about media types joining up here and accepting feedback, thats good, I think... For the record I quite like VBH mostly out of FG.

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

It was me - I'll support anyone who looks for feedback in suppling the most constructive feedback I can For the record I quite like VBH mostly out of FG. I've always had a thing for VBH - it's the voice I reckon but unfortunately the rest of the show hasn't been "good enough" to make me watch it but if I'm told changes will be making it better I will watch a few shows and see how it goes Like was said a while back - "we" aren't the target audience - FG shouldn't try to be TG (they will lose in the competition) I'm not a fan of TG either as that is just entertainment gift wrapped in a car related paper. I'd like to see a proper "car" show - looking at all aspects of motoring but that's me and I'm sure what I want isn't the same as the vast majority of the viewing public

Car TV programmes are it seems very difficult to produce. But I think with TG and FG we do OK. The problem is all down to ratings and a car show that was all facts and figures would be boring to a large chunk of the viewing public. TG has been a huge success in recent years because it's fun, it's an entertainment show with cars in and what's wrong with that? My mum likes it and my Mrs loves it. FG treads a careful line between fun stuff and some facts and IMO does quite well at it. If the show was changed to being far more fact and figure related people a lot of people would switch off and the show would be left with the die hard viewers and eventually it would be pulled by Channel 5.
THere is so much competition in this area that the actual need for a facts and figures show is no longer really there. If you want to know all about the MPG, towing weight etc of the latest Mondeo then the internet is your friend and this is where most people turn now for car information. This very forum is the very thing that has had a big impact on car TV. As the intenet and technology evolves more video content will be on sites like this with people doing video diary builds of their cars and going out and filming each other in their rides. THese videos will then be easily and quickly available to everyone. As this situation becomes more of a reality the TV shows have to glam up the features and really push the boat out to get the WOW factor that keeps viewing figures high so they get the ad revenue.
Here's hoping Jonny's influence will mean more retro action on FG but that they still keep some facts and figures in there for us nerds.
Nick
