I have been setting up my timing in an effort to improve my awful fuel consumption and have run into a few strange things..
Firstly, the TDC mark on the flywheel is different from those in pics i've seen:
It is definitely TDC though, all other marks align correctly and i have checked with a dipstick in no.1 plug hole.
So, i set the timing using a strobe to this mark:
I am assuming this is the 18 degrees BTDC mark.
However, the rotor arm does not line up with the notch on the distributor body. Bit difficult to see but it's way out:
If i line the marks on the distributor up the engine doesnt want to start.
I'm thinking this is likely due to the distributor having been put in incorrectly. The rotor is pointing to no.1 spark plug though. Should i take the distributor out and line the rotor up with the notch or is this unimportant?
Cheers.
