Remember the days when sex was safe and motorsport was dangerous. Vintage bling always attracts pussy.

Later bugs are always a good way into Bugdom, The Fat Beetles generally don't get as much love but are also arguably the better cars.
Fat chick beetle, 'German look' like the 2 blue one's in this thread already and you're onto a winner.

I think if I was gonna go for one it'd be a later one, few Watercooled styling cues, good stance and probably for half the price of an average earlier Bug.

I have a real hankering for a baja at the moment. Must be the sense that summer is near.

This was my first beetle and i loved it. I missed it so much when i got rid of it that I tried to buy it back a few years ago but it was slightly out of my budget

Sadly it was pretty rotten as I had bought it needing work and kept it running on a student grant for four years. I sat it in the garage with the plan to restore it but when I was offered my first type 3 I rashly did this to make space; End of my first car by route9autos.co.uk, on Flickr Dave

Ah, the memories. Amazingly I did not grind that out anywhere and some of my cars have been slightly higher (rear engined FTW?) What's good about them? They are cool, you get to meet a massive fan base, they are dead simple to work on in many respects, roomy in addition to being not too bad a steer in well setup form. Now for the next part. Whilst they are utilitarian when compared to a modern, they are compared to a number of classics from the 70s. Assuming your heater channels work, get used to having a red hot leg and frozen hands . A Mini or Hillman Imp as an example would offer more in the term of accoutrements. Some of the cheaper spares can be downright rubbish (but this is an easy matter to sort). They are not the fastest things in the world (38BHP from a 1300TP; A Mini 850cc will not deliver much short of that) and quite a few examples that are sold as perfect cars can be snotters to drive. Would I go for one again? The thought does keep coming back . They are good car to learn things from mind you. I did intend on using my Beetle's engine as my first engine to upgrade (1300-1600 (or 1641), carbs etc.).
