The wife and I will have to get a bigger car soon, as the Golf just isn't big enough for all the baby curse word stuff we have to carry round now. We've been looking at several options recently, like estates, MPV's etc. But whilst I was in the States last week a very nice Dayvan was parked in the Hotel car park, and I must say how impressed I was with it. Looking at prices for them on ebay is making me come to coinclusion that it'd be cheaper to buy a decent Dayvan as it would to be to buying an MPV / estate car. I know there were quite a few engine options, and the most popular being the 4.3ltr Vortek...and I know it'll cost a bit in fuel, but I'm going to save a fair bit of monsy by buying one. Your thoughts please

Good idea, it's definitely worth avoiding the MPV market for something more van-like.
A Dodge Ram (or similar - Econoline etc) for the full on Day Van expereience...maybe an Astro for a similar but slightly more compact version. If you want RHD and more economy potential the maybe an imported HiAce or Caravan, or if you want to play it safer but still want the size than a Tourneo or Caravelle might be an option.

I've recently ignored my own advice and gone back to an Estate. My new Volvo 850 T-5 has got full leather, climate control, 7 seats, impressive safety, Volvo build quality and 225bhp. Between £800 and £1500 should get you a useable one.

Big early 90's estates are the way to go, unless you plan on using a Dayvan only occasionally I think you'd get fed up with the slightly bigger size of it. At the price Rmad stated, any sensibly sized Dayvan option will either be knackered or expensive. My Camry was £550, try finding Dayvan/MPV type stuff at that price.....
You like German stuff, what about Merc TE?
Mazda Bongo maybe? Loads around nowadays, running gear supposedly much like Ford Ranger.
Shame Mr_Bo11ox isn't around right now, he'd tell you about the American ones - Gayvan and line-dancing come to mind.

That's because estates rock. They do everything that stupid mpv's do without the dull image. And you've bought one of the best estates ever made too! I heartily echo this sentiment. MPV's are just pointless IMO, especially as many of them actually have far inferior luggage space than an estate. Personally, I'm surprised you need something bigger with 1 child. We had a VX Astra and that accomodated everything just fine - we only moved up to the estate when we had 2 little angels to car about, and because I like the extra space it gives me for slinging my work clobber in the back. RMad's pick of the wagons is, of course, THE DADDY. I'd love T-5 performance with acres of space. Although I guess a T-5 wouldn't do the 50++ mpg our focus does

Although I guess a T-5 wouldn't do the 50++ mpg our focus does 23ish around town and just over 30 on a (hilly!) run. Yes, it's got a trip computer. Don't knock MPVs though - those Zafiras are annoying clever...but if you do want an MPV then van-based is the way to go...my Tourneo coped admirably with all I threw at it, if you've got loads of children/luggage/work stuff/Bikes/whhels and stuff to carry then that's not a job for an estate or a 'normal' MPV.

The main problem we're facing is the space left up front with the car seat in the back.
I'm 6'3" and my wife is 5'11" - with the car seat behind either seat leaves very little leg room for the passenger / driver.
We go camping quite a bit and there's no chance we'll get a buggy, travel cot and luggage / equiptment for a week in the Golf.
A T5 is out of the questions because of MPG, so a Diesel (maybe LPG) is the only option.
As the car is going to be the wife's daily, it's primarily her decission and the only estate she likes is the SAAB 93/95 - and it's going to be hard to find one of them for the budget.

. A T5 is out of the questions because of MPG Surely a gay van is going to hit you harder for juice than a T5, I think their average MPG is almost a negative value. Plus, you have to factor in the cost of airbrushing a massive Phoenix on the bonnet.

Plus, you have to factor in the cost of airbrushing a massive Phoenix on the bonnet. You can get one that's been converted to LPG, or I would get one converted if it hadn't been already. Already in my watch list

Sound like you've pretty much made up your mind really. I hope your wife enjoys reverse parking something bigger than a transit with squit all rearward visibility and the added bonus of the steering wheel on the wrong side every time she nips down the shops

That's half the problem pog - I've pretty much made my mind up which will more than likely cause some arguments later We were going to buy a 2nd hand Grand Scenic, but I'm a bit reluctant to pay £10k + for an extended piece of French curse word TBH (no offence to French car owners here). Not only that, but in 2 years time it's going to be worth 2p so I'd much rather spend half the amount of money on something that's going to last me a lot longer than 2 / 3 years. What I really want is an A6 Estate (around the 51 / 02 plate) 1.9 TDi - but most of them have galactic mileage

If you can put LPG on a Dayvan you can put it on a T5 - a T5 on gas would be better than a Dodge Ram on it. Volvo 850s have lots of rear legroom, by the way.
What about a W124 Merc wagon?...there's loads about at good prices at the moment.
