car equiv of having a face only a mother could love, but for that reason alone i find them pretty cool. When I used to work at rover, one of the security guys owned a turbo one. He told me the handling was as crazy as the styling, which tbh I don't doubt!

I have happy memories of chasing a boggo Maestro Advantage round the Alpine Course at Millbrook in a chipped Renault 11 Turbo whilst driving round it to marshal on a stage rally.....and being unable to keep up. A mate of mine had a gennie MG Maestro Turbo (with the Tickford bodykit etc etc) and it was phenomenally quick. Even now you'd struggle to find something of similar size that would keep up with one. Better cars than anyone EVER gave them credit for. I'd love one, but would have to be a diesel.....because they were the roughest-sounding lump of pig iron I've ever heard, yet are fantastic (but heavy) fun to drive and will pull a house down.

Is it repairable today if it goes wrong I wonder? Depends what's wrong. If it's a microprocessor or a ROM chip, probably not repairable. OTOH, if it's the audio amplifier, power supply, etc. - probably repairable. Thankfully, the logic circuits are probably going to be reliable unless subjected to reverse polarity etc. DISCONNECT WHILE WELDING.

My dad use to have an A reg Vanden Plas (the one with the voice) & the memory of that has stuck with me always - just wondered if anyone has any love for these?? My Mum had a black A reg Vanden Plas with baby blue velour interior she traded in a slightly bent brown Maxi for. Was indeed a cool car but despite only being a couple of years old at the time and low mileage, all the electrics on it were very temperamental. The windows were the worst as they always needed a hefty thump to door cards in the right spot to get them to roll down. The voice would have the odd off day too. Going by how bad that one was and they were the top end model which only ran for a couple of years, I'd be surprised if there are any with a functioning digi dash left. Would be really good to see one again. It must have left an impression as my Ma now drives a new Mini which talks too.

I like Maestros, wokred with a bloke who had a black turbo and it was VERY quick. It would defo leave some modern cars in it's wake. I can't think of many cars which dissolve as quick though.

I think the Maestro is a good old bus to be honest, Austin Rover nailed them together as good as they could to be fair to them... They really did try to pull themselves out of their dark 1970's moments and this car (along with the Metro) helped them go some way to achieving this... As we all know their best wasn't still quite good enough I believe the Maestro was actually ready to be launched at the tail end of the 70's but there were many delays and set backs that halted that! It probably would've been a world beater if it was launched during that period... Anyhow, the Maestro...? They're a good car and above all they're British (Rule Britannia and all the stuff, what!!!)

Same as this, but in the dark blue with the blue velour interior. It had 98K on it in 1992 when my dad upgraded to a Volvo 740 GLE-T estate. Given to my Uncle in Manchester. It was stolen and then recovered - uncle ran it for a few years. then it sat on his driveway in Ashton-under-Lyne near oldham. someone knocked on the door in 2000 and asked if it was for sale. It was started with a new battery and driven onto a trailer - would be weird if some on here knew where it was - A802KNB was its plate.
