Nope,.. its a Sunny and RWD Si.. number 2 is in terms of fabricating engine mounts, cutting and rewelding gearbox tunnels and splicing looms... Frankly my aim is 200bhp per Tonne and I don't care how I get there... but sticking in a CA18DET is adding weight ,.. even if it does add power ... I'm trying to avoid strippin the interior,.. as it is somewhat mint

Here is a thought,.. if I get a Renault 5 Carb,.. is it possible to run it without a turbo until I source and install one?? I figure its a carb at the end of the day,.. flappy paddle, some air, some fuel, a manifold,.. bish bash bosh, one running engine

yeah thats fine, i ran my metro turbo unit for a few months before i popped the turbo on. It actually gave over 60mpg on one slip streaming journey back from uni, that was before the turbo though!

Okay another question,.. I've been thinking manifolds,...
I figure I have 2 options,.. 1 get one fabricated,.. or 2 adapt the one I have.
How likely is 2? I've got a single carb on their at the moment I'm wondering if I'd be able to sort out some kind of adapter plate that would allow me to bolt up the R5 carb? Or is the manifold likely to be so in-efficient to make this a worthless thought any way?
If it is going to suck (pardon the inverse pun),.. how the hell am I going to sort a manifold without it costing the earth?

can you post up a picture of the manifold? what is the current carb on there, is it a downdraught? Ratlook will be able to advise on the flange front, and it should be possible to convert your manifold, best to have a look see.

I can tell you all about flanges.... its a two bolt fitting, like a 1.25" SU but downdraught. I'm thinking it will be a hitachi? or a nikki? and their for probably a twin choke downdraught, if I'm correcting in thinking this a crude plate bolted over the hole with a the renault carb bolted to the middle would be just up your street - if a little poor flowing, you could spend ages making a fancy adapter but at the end of the day its only going to be asa good as the old manifold its bolted too. one thing - don't forget you will need to re jet it. Just out of interest, why are you using the r5 turbo turbo? i expect you could dig up somthing on here / ebay which would suit your needs just as well and not be making silly money. Nick

David - depending on the port spacing, there may be an easily-available manifold which would flow quite well and fit the R5 Carb. *n

Yeah the ebay advert was confusing,.. labeled up as an ECU,.. and I thought it might be like the old Bosch jobbies rather than modern ECU... turns out its not an ECU ... well not as I understand it. I see the discussion has moved on, but for the sake of completeness (and to help anyone messing around with old Renault engines in the future) : The thingy in the picture is a Renix unit, a rather primitive mapped electronic ignition made by Bendix and used in many Renault engines of the '80s. It comes with its own coil and vacuum/boost sensor (obvious in the picture), but is practically non-reprogrammable and therefore using it in different engines isn't a good idea. For more info on it, check the excellent posts by a gentleman nicknamed 'mac' on the volvo300mania forum (e.g. this topic ).
