On the way home the gearshifts seemed harsher. No limp home mode, just very abrupt changes. So, it looks like the SLK is now going to have a big repair - the valve body and conductor plate will have to come out I reckon, because most likely candidate for that symptom is a snapped pressure control spring. It'll be happening though; no matter what, this car stays. And they say never buy a manual Merc I love my little SLK230 with a six speed manual - also had it almost as long as you've had yours - definitely a keeper

I'd like to try a manual 230K sometime - the power delivery of that engine is SO good.
I'd rather change a contact plate/electrical connector than a clutch. After that it gets expensive...
Never would have thought the SLK would catch my heart though, when it came out I thought they were bulbous and ugly!

I'm just in the process of getting a 15% overdrive pulley made up for the crank - that should make it even better My intention is when it dies to put the engine and box in a caterham style kit car - I reckon that would be a blast in a lightweight car I'd rather change a contact plate/electrical connector than a clutch. After that it gets expensive... I'd rather do a clutch anytime but I see your point Never would have thought the SLK would catch my heart though, when it came out I thought they were bulbous and ugly! I liked them when they came out - a little blobby but the folding roof had huge appeal where I live - took a few years for me to afford one mind

Right, car up on ramps.
Gearbox misbehaving - one oil-soaked gearbox connector. The crooks at Auto Trans Gloucester had claimed to have replaced the pin bushing at 90,000 miles (it's done 17,000 miles since) whilst charging £207 for a service and telling Alex that the car would need a transmission rebuild; when I checked the locking tab they hadn't touched the dipstick, and when dipped, the fluid hadn't been changed.
Now, it's entirely on me that I've done all this time without doing the service - I even bought the parts - but that's my choice and I accept the consequences. These idiots charged money to do something, and didn't do it. I've been aware of it not having been done, but by the time I found out it was too late to take any action (I got the car back 500 miles after it was done and the fluid clearly wasn't fresh).
The squeak on the exhaust is caused by a broken welded bracket on the pipe running past the exhaust. So I'll replace that section of exhaust. May as well do the whole system if I can find a factory set or factory-fit stainless system.
Oil cooler pipes for the transmission look a little shabby, so as I have a new radiator for it (thanks, Amazon prime random sales) I should do all of this at once - coolant, thermostat, oil cooler pipes, radiator, ATF swap and ATF filter.

So glad you're still giving this car love After much discussion with SWMBO, I was very close to buying it when you had it advertised - only the imminent failure of the auto box in my C270CDi estate used all that years second car budget

TBH after all this time, and my C5 getting written off, I love this SLK so much I was tempted to buy another as a daily driver!

Do u have a thread on that gorgeous C140? No, and the C140 is up for sale - too much for me to take on at the moment It's a 500 SEC, which I appreciate it just a badge really. It has a couple of electrical gremlins, standard for an S-class.

Gutted you have to sell. My CL500 was a 98 model and felt like it was formed from solid titanium or granite. Nicest car I've ever owned or driven and I've driven lots of exotica! Can't u get it sorted?

I just bought one of these off my dad, a 97 auto 230K. Silver, wheel arches are bubbling and some switches are missing bits. Ain't care. Love it. Especially for £500.

Can't u get it sorted? Oh, it's by no means beyond sorting, I just feel a bit burned out on complex cars - I'm alway fixing other people's cars and my own slide back, so right now I'm focusing on getting the Twingo headgasket sorted and getting that back on the road, the Sera I've just bought made into a funky sci-fi film car, and finding a daily driver. Just missed out on a Subaru SVX so sanity isn't wholly engaged! The SEC is fantastic when it works. It's just a wiring glitch and either it's a bad earth somewhere in the loom on the way to the front lights, or a faulty lamp relay/bulb failure module. The soft close doors aren't behaving either, and the usual front wing rust. So, eh - I could fix it if I had less stress, but I always have loads of stress.

The soft close door issue is likely to be either a crushed pipe or even a leaky one under the front seat.

Now I'd never found those in my searches but thanks to your clues now I have - looks like a 13.5% increase by my rough calcs so not to be sniffed at. Cheap too - may have to try one just to see but I don't like reducing the driven pulley due to risk of slip issues are increased.

The soft close door issue is likely to be either a crushed pipe or even a leaky one under the front seat. It's not activating the pump - which is working for the boot - so I thought it might be electrical. The seat pipes look good. Point, though - should the seats move forward when you tilt the back? It seems weird that you can tilt but they stay in place, when they have electric motors and so forth.

I found it before even taking ownership of the car, much to the old mans disgust! A few different MB forums seem to rave about them, mostly due to the Kleeman (sp?) being NLA.

Been doing a bit of digging on those pulleys - I need to get my charger off to measure it properly but I reckon the E45 one is overstating the reduction - I think my std OE pulley is only a few mm larger.....

Strangely, my soft close was a bit iffy throughout my ownership but the seats moved forward right up until about a week before I sold it - then they stopped! The butlers also stopped just before!

Right, another thing to diagnose. My butlers are not just functional, they're downright intrusive. Need to find a wiring diagram. I bet the seat tilt relies on knowing if there's an occupant in the seat, same as the butlers, and if the sensor pads are playing up... Or, just sell it before spending any more time being driven nuts by it!

So, some bits of the SLK being sorted. On the computer, the EGS readout says "Communication Lost" essentially. Up on the lift... And, we find the gearbox connector covered in oil. At the same time, the welded bracket that holds the catalytic convertor steady has cleared rusted off, hence the constant squeak and chatter from under the car. Some staining near the oil cooler pipe, and the oil cooler pipe doesn't look great.
