I'm refinishing some wheels ready for tyres, but whats the deal with winter v summer? it nearly is winter, so should i fit winter tyres? Or just go with some decent summer tyres? How much difference is it really going to make? Will i have no grip with summers tyres in winter and will winter tyres be awful in summer?

I like Dom's approach for tyres on his old Audi - leave it on snow tyres and sliiiiiiiiide around corners.

Winter tyre for winter...... stickeys for summer ;D Seriously, until you have used winter tyres you will not believe what a difference it makes They are designed to warm up quicker so the cold tarmac and winter permaslime are not an issue, coupled with the fact you get to bomb down the unused outside lane in the snow ;D as everyone else is slippy sliding around nose to tail.... means I will always fit winter tyres now for winter use I went out to the Alps for winter 2 years ago with the Audi... Never fitted chains even in 9" of fresh snow ;D But the best bit was, tanking out there through france just before christmas, we drove through the night in the sheeting "Rain" or so I thought..... Quattro on Winter tyres.... 110ish on the autoroute all the way...... It was only when I pulled in for fuel that I realised it wasnt actually Rain at all..... it was really wet Snow/slush that was falling The car had not given a wriggle, lock up, slide, twitch or anything and that was all down to the tyres As Penski says, as soon as it warms up again they slide like mad as they just get too hot and smear themselves over the road Do it..... you wont regret it..... I have a new set of snow tyres up in the loft ready for fitment to the Kadett shortly HTH Dom

^ Ditto what Dom said
I have a set of Pirelli M&S tyres for the Olop and another set for a Senator/Carlton
Best safety addition for the winter
Mine however are on horrid rusty steels so they only get fitted when snow is iminent - rest of time normal tyres are fine
I've never found them to be that good in the wet tho but that could be down to the brand.

where do you buy them, ive got a set of 14x6 revo RFX;s for the winter because i don't want to use the bbs, so it makes sense that if they are only being used in the winter then winter tyres should be put on.
ideally something low profile would be nice.....

What an ace plan. I have spare wheels for nearly every car, winters on standard rims, Yokoono's on racey smartey rimz. fantastic advice, specially with a fleet of RWD's

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

Mytyres Black circles Local tyre depot etc etc It's the LAW in Germany plus some other european states so most sizes should be readily avaliable Plus unless they are ultra odd size and profile they are cheap as chips

Get yourself some scrapyard steels and fit winter tyres to those and pick a "Cheap " size 175/65/14 will be cheap enough and you don't want wide low profiles either, you want the tyre to move around to get heat in them and narrow is less likely to aquaplane too don't go for m+s you want winter tyres, there is a difference HTH Dom

well, the 185/55 are the cheapest, so i think ill go that route. I know price isnt the best way to pic tyres, but never mind They will be on painted alloys, so should be ok. Ill fit the summer tyres to my polished teardrops.

Ive seen a few different style of tyre actually marked up as M&S, some are the traditional type, that I always think of as Colway Nora`s. And others have been more like a winter tyre, kind of like a slighly chunky normal tyre, directional as well. I am sure they would be good in the snow but not really cut out for mud (tread blocks not open enough)
Got to admit I have never fitted a winter or M&S tyre to my car for the snow, even though I normally have quite a few laid around. I have always used whatever tyres are on the car and driven accordingly ;D
