Not economical. But economical is very rarely cool My commute is done in this.. 3.0 Supra. Lots of 80's RWD fun and comfort. The inline 6 with a 5 speed manual makes short work of motorways and makes B roads fun.

Take a job nearer home AK........ 10 hours a week just travelling back and forth is almost like having a part time job as well. All very well to say, but you try getting a job round here. Nottingham is (according the news) the highest rate of unemployment with 600 jobseekers for every vacancy advertised. To be honest, when I worked in the city centre just 6 miles from my house it took me 40 minutes to get to work. Traffic and the fact the car park was nearly 10 minutes walk from my office building... I'm coming up with a commuting plan which is as ridiculous as you may expect from me...

Although retro is cool for so many reasons everyday without a modern could be a drag, especially as we all know gremlins do creep in on older cars plus security issues as well(although that may not be relevant). To me as you love yank how about a touch newer and jeep grand Cherokee flavour?I have an LPG one and got 30mpg equivalent all the time out of it,on a run even better.never get stuck in the snow,go really well on the motorway and loads of toys!! If were talking cars a nice e36 325i auto saloon will see you at 28-30 mpg, bags of power, plenty of toys, pence to buy and maintain and out action when you want it. I bought one off here for £350 with tax and decent ticket only really for the engine but I've done gatwick-swansea,Swansea-gatwick,gatwick-heathrow,let it stand a fortnight, fired straight up and home full of luggage,3 up at 85-90 mph on £30's worth of fuel(180-190 miles). No oil or water use, comfy, sat in a jam by Bristol for an hour and temp never went over 1/2. Good cars and over 20 years old now plus loads under £5-600.

Left field: Scimitar GTE. Great at cruising, plenty of grunt up hills (though not v8-style power), good round the bends, reasonable economy - especially with the overdrive, which makes overtaking nice as well - simple and tough mechanicals, and reasonable parts supply. EDIT: or just LPG the Fairmont. It's what you're trying to justify to yourself, right.

You wouldn't believe the curse word idea I'm trying to justify to myself. LPG on Fairmont is quite the sensible option LOL.
I'm thinking I need two commutable cars because one may be off the road for repairs.
Thats a better idea than owning a modern, right?

You don't really need two commutable cars. Just handy to have another vehicle you could use short term (could be anything) just in case.

I'm going to agree with some of the others and say LPG the Fairmont - It's a Ford, so it should be fairly trouble-free for bigger mileage once you've fully sorted it mechanically, plus it's an American Ford so therefore times this by approximately 10.05
:-)
