I used to know a car dealer years ago who would change belts like this. I must be honest, I've never considered doing one this way and i certainly wouldnt consider it a valid 'tip'.
It might work on older single cam petrol engines but anything with multi cams or a diesel pump, its not worth the few minutes you'd save if it all went wrong. After removing all that curse word just to get to the belt in the first place how much longer does it take to line up a few timing marks?
