Changing the carb to a 34 weber will make a world of difference to it's drivability. You used to be able to buy a conversion kit for around £200. It will save you that in fuel in a year ish. At some point I'll put a weber on it. Since the new exhaust its ran pretty amazingly. Must have really affected it for a while. Also fitted a new Air filter today. I think i came up with the Weber 32ich for this engine? might be wrong though.

I think my dad sold his for £50 around then with no MOT. I wish this one had been £90 haha! I bought a C-plate 1.6 Ghia for £50 in about 2005 - with tax and MOT!

ahh man! i guess it would just be like buying a 15 year old Focus now though. I always wanted one and had the chance to buy one when i was in Manchester. It was at a scrap yard but they put it on ebay for £300. Nobody had bid on it all week so i went down to make an offer on it, they said go home and bid and it'll probably be yours, long story short they pulled it off ebay when i got home and said the bosses son wanted it :/ I wish i'd had that one as i bet it would have been way more solid than mine was and i had to pay £1500 4 years later!! Probably over priced then.

How did you get one at 10 Geoff? haha I'd have loved one at 10! to be honest if i'd got one at 17 when i'd wanted i probably wouldn't have one now! it does feel very first car sometimes. I'm not sure if i'll get round to a bigger engine any time soon. I think i'd have to a garage so i could keep on top of the rust before it would be worth it. I do have some RS breaks and a load of polly bush parts that i picked up last year. I think over time i'll fit them and maybe one day if i go for a big engine i'll be ready to go. The car does have a readers rides thread. Will update soon, a lot of early photos don't work thanks for photoshop. forum.retro-rides.org/thread/180857/1985-ford-mk3I think my dad sold his for £50 around then with no MOT. I wish this one had been £90 haha! No! The car was 10 year old and i was twice that! I was certainly wearing a bit better than the car was though. Know what you mean with these feeling like a first car as mine was my fourth and i really needed to escape from it party because of that. I'm not sure if the brakes are a wise move as it might become over braked. I wanted to go the RS Brakes with one of my 1.3s back then but a very good friend advised against that. Poly bushes were always a good idea for Fords of this era, especially on the front! If you do think about the bigger engine, would a 1.6 Zetec-SE out of a Focus go in? All the very best, Geoff.

haha sorry Geoff! miss read that! Yeah this is my 4th car as well. i had a 1995 Escort that was a factory xr3i ish replica... compared to this that was luxury. I think if i put better steering wheel on it, i'd loose that first car feel a bit. the original steering wheel feels very much like the plastic seats in primary school.
I've never thought of the brakes becoming "over braked". would that be just too sensitive for the power then? I worked pretty hard on the stock ones last year to bleed them all and replace the fluid (standard stuff i know) and they're really sharp now. I think the small wheels maybe let it down when stopping quickly.
from what i've seen the 1.6 Zetec would be the way to go. i've seen a lot of 2.0 Mondeo engines going into Escorts. Part of me thought if i was going to do it, maybe going completely mad with it would be the way. It's unlikely to happen anytime soon though... unless the 1.1 blows up!
I did see a 2.1 ( i think a bored out RS engine) in the shell of a 1.3L mk3 maybe two years ago. apparently the guy took it out of his RS turbo as that was rotten. I noticed it swiftly was bought and stripped haha. That would be my kinda thing i think though... unfortunately i was in deep with this at the time.
