This is, I think, the conclusion to the Insurance episode.
Car valued at £500 Cost of repairs estimated at £2,500 Result of a claim going through is a Cat B write off, spares only.
So, instead I shan't be making a claim and will instead have to arrange collection of the car to get it back home and repair it myself, footing the bill out of my own rather shallow pockets. This is not ideal but I am not about to see this car scrapped for want of a little love by some people who know what they're doing. I'm not in a particularly great mood, even though I shall be getting my car back, I wish I hadn't gone through the insurance at all now because it's just delayed me getting the car fixed, but I had to be sure for my own peace of mind that it was repairable, which it is.
The final verdict on the actual damage is a slightly bent chassis leg and inner wing which can be massaged back into shape and some deformed panels which can be replaced or reshaped accordingly. The car *is* repairable and *is* possible to be made safe again, but it's going to cost time, effort and money which I don't presently have. Thankfully, I have the space to keep her warm and dry in the meantime and the people and means to put it all right again eventually. Won't be sorted this side of Christmas though, that's for sure.

If they've valued it at £500 it'd get written off as spares only whatever you did, as from previous posts you said the minimum to fix it would be £500.

No, it doesn't get written off if I decide not to make a claim. The claim hasn't started yet, just the assessment, so by getting it back without making a claim it doesn't get registered as crash damaged and therefore doesn't gain a Cat anything. Or so I've been told tonight on the telephonical device by the assessor man.

The insurance company wanted to write the car off as a Cat C, so I cancelled the claim and paid for the new window, wiring loom and dash myself. Did a HPI check to be sure a few months later, and there's no Cat C marker against it. If you cancel the claim, you also keep the the insurance policy as it hasn't paid out. However, as I later found out, mine was never reinstated, so I was driving without insurance for 10 months!

When I saw the thread title was now called Conclusion I was genuinely expecting you to say this was the end of the road for your Princess exploits! Glad it isn't. Have you bought the spares car yet?

That happened to me with my Audi 80, it got written off as a CAT B which I thought was overkill, unfortunately I needed the money or I probably would of done what you did as it was repairable.
However you can put a CAT B back on the road, (there are threads about it on here) I was planning to do this as I really loved the car, but I needed to remove part of it so I could keep my Audi 90 on the road as this had a rotten door shut/rear arch!
Incidently I only sold it for scrap last weekend as I really didnt want to get rid, but I had run out of space. The accident was in 2009!
By the way I have enjoyed the updates on your princess and I am really pleased that you are keeping it and getting it repaired!

Although this is not the perfect outcome it is far from being the worst...! It really could have been MUCH worse right from the moment you had that tragic accident... I think that you could probably get some help on your quest to get the Princess back on the road as there are a lot of people on here rooting for this old wedge shaped, gas suspended barge to grace the roads of this green and pleasant land once more...

They've valued it at £500, so even if you'd have made a claim at minimum repair cost it'd still have got written off.

Claim is now cancelled, I'm double-checked no hidden costs are incurred and the car is free of a Category marker because I didn't know I had to until it was raised as an issue on another forum. This is a heart-over-head situation, it really is. I'm feeling a bit despondant about the whole thing, it's not how it ought to be. I have to arrange collection of the car and it has to be affordable, I'm hoping I can get someone to do £X per mile for about £30-50ish in the very, very near future. Urgh... we'll see what the future holds, it's still uncertain as there's still so much that can go wrong. stealth: yes, I understand now, I had misunderstood. djefk: because of no insurance payout, I'll be relying on living on beans for a few months so I can buy the donor, I may even have to let it go, but I discovered another professional contact that might help me out with repairs at a very reasonable hourly rate. It's all about time and money, as usual.

Are the storage yard charging you by the day now? How about asking nicely if they'll drop it back to you, they'll have made enough from the ins company they might be feeling generous. Does it not still drive? It didn't look that bad to be honest.

The car drives perfectly fine, I drove it to the MoT station after the accident and then all the way home with no issue beyond wonky lights and the very corner of the arch rubbing on the tyre when the steering was at one particular point of lock.
I don't know what costs are being incurred, if any, I'm having to communicate with the assessor and insurer via e-mail due to a clash of working hours. I've already been told they won't return the car free of charge, which is bloody annoying, and because the tax has expired while in their storage and there's no MoT because I was on the way to get one, the old one having now expired, there's no way I can drive it home. It's the least friendly situation to be in because if it were legal to, I could happily drive it home with no real bother.
So I have to wait on an e-mail I won't get until tomorrow night after work, find out how much and who is available to get the car home to me and figure out how I'm going to work it all round. Not an ideal situation, particularly as I'm off to view another car on Saturday to use as my new daily now I have two broken cars and am borrowing a third that I'd like to give back.

Book MOT, drive to MOT station, fail test, drive home to "place of work" to correct failures.

and as james has said, you can legally drive to a pre-booked mot (and home again) with no tax and test, so worse cse it's 30 quid for a days tempcover / a borrow of someone with a traders policy and you can get it home - sucks about paying storage though
when the first prairie got pinched and burnt out I had to pay 150 quid police recovery fees as I didn't want to go through the insurance
good luck with it all

With all the doom I'm reading not just here, but on other forums I've been posting with updates on this, I might have to throw the towel in and just not get any pay out and let them scrap the car because in all honesty, it'll be a toss-up between a several hundred pounds of costs or a replacement daily driver.
I'm sick of this, I can't seem to get a break at the moment and if there are substantial fees I have to meet expect the next pictures of this car to be ones with a grabber through the roof.

Don't be! you bought this car because you loved it. You were repairing it because you loved it. You were painting it purple because you... well you were painting it purple. ;D Seriously though. You walked away from an insurance settlement because you wanted the car - and you know parts cars are available cheap. Get it home as quickly as you can - park it if you need to recover a bit till you fall in love again but, it's your car, and your hobby - another one won't do. Sure you'll be restoring more than refreshing but you'll have something that, if anything, you'll be even more proud of!
