My 2nd car, 10 years ago, was an '89G 8v. Had 170k up it when I got it and, sadly, it failed it's ticket 6 months later thanks to tinworm.
Was a great car up until then though and a definite step up from my first car, a 205 RG. Took all the abuse a mad 23yo was able to chuck at it.
I've driven a mate's valver since but probably wasn't pushing on enough to compare and contrast. I certainly wouldn't have an issue using either as a daily and I drive an '04 CRV and a '99 Octavia these days!
Just to throw a spanner in the works perhaps - I ran a Mk3 8v a few years back and thought that was great as a daily. I had SWMBO in a Bora at the time and the Golf was a good compromise between Mk2 and Mk4 IMO. Replaced it with a VR6, which was great, but I still had a soft spot for that Mk3 more-door.

I navigated in a very early (A-plated) Mk2 GTi on road rallies about 10 years ago. A brilliant tool which took every bit of abuse we could muster. Never once failed to start/finish/put grins on our faces. 8v lump was well grunty, but was running solid lifters so I don't think it was stock. These had the added effect of making it sound like it had the engine out of a Talbot Horizon under the bonnet, but BOY would it rev.
Even on events it would return 22-25mpg and close on 40 when touring. When Toby (the owner/driver) bought it, he'd heard a few horror stories about the curse word handbrake. We found that to be false in this instance, she'd 'go in on the handbrake' every bit as well as the Mk2 Escort he used to own.
All this from a car with almost 250k on the clock. EPIC. I was with Toby on Saturday spectating on the Wyedean Stages.....to my delight he's got his 03-plated 325Ci up for sale and is going looking for another 8v Mk2 Golf......
Just do it.

Solid lifters were stock on the A plated GTIs That's why, then. It did go exceptionally well, mind...we marshalled at Millbrook Proving Ground in about 2004 and took the Golf...one of our mates had an Impreza Turbo which couldn't get any more than a couple of car lengths in front of us most of the way round the Alpine Course.....even allowing for Toby's considerable skill behind the wheel, the car was plenty quick.

i was really contemplating getting a mk2 valver, when i sold my scirocco. However after a few driver of either friends and some i was looking at i found them to be a bit boring. The only other car i would have had in the vw range of around 80s and 90s was going to be a corrado, but they seem to have appreciated quite a bit. I have now gone french and got a mk1 clio 16v with 2l bottom end. i love the thing especially in the wet when the rear end like to have a waive. The golfs have the following and are easily repairs which is an up, however i think they are just a bit plain. I think if i were looking at a golf it would have to be a mk1 tbh. It lives up to the golf name the most i think, smiles all round.

hey mate is that colour capri green ? Nope - Montana Green! It was one of the last MK2's ever made! Chassis number was 85th last MK2 made, the MK3's started after that. This was one of 5 GTD's made in this colour! Was a lot quicker than a GTi and loads more torque!

All the Montana Green ones are either J or K reg.
look under the boot carpet for the build sticker - LA6U is the paint code for Capri green. LB6Z is Montana Green
Hope that helps! I love Montana Green MK2's even more than Oak green! Wish i'd never sold mine!
