My wife has decided to get rid of her beloved Rav4 and has fallen for a Jeep cherokee (pre '00)
Reason for this being,we've just found out we have another little un on the way ;D ;D
Anyways,it looks like the 4.0 litre is out of the question, down to running costs,so we will be looking at either the 2.5 sport,or the 2.5 turbo diesel. Anyone got any info on these?,as I don't know diddly about them

I`ve considered them myself before, but always changed my mind at the last minute. They are cheap enough to buy. The 2.5 petrols are supposed to be underpowered and not particulary economical. 2.5TD power not too bad but again not very economical. Newer diesels are supposed to be a lot better. They sold plenty though so they cant be that bad.

A mate of mine just sold his M plate 4.0 Limited with a pro LPG conversion for just over a grand.
These things are the original SUV, and can trace their DNA back to the Wagoneer of 1968.
4.0 is a tough, unbreakable lump but pretty thirsty. Even the 2.5 will be. Lets face it is a brick on wheels and it weighs a bit. The 2.5TD is a Mercedes motor.
AFAIK the yanks never got the 2.5 petrol or the TD.
Everyone I know who's had one has been very positive about the cars.

be careful, i think the 2.5 TD is a VM effort, like in a Rover 825 diesel or a Scorpio. A great engine, if a tad fragile on the head gasket (of which there are 4, one for each cylinder!)

Hmm. I'd rather a Range Rover than a Cherokee, but that said I think tech & economy wise there's little to choose between them. Alot depends on your budget... if you can stretch to a diesel 'P38' (95-on) range rover (+2001 spec lights etc ) then that would be my choice (ps. congrats on the good news!)

They are soooo shhhiiiiiiiitttt don't get one, my sister had one, and it was diabolical. Rubbish ride, DRANK petrol, looked hideous, and was impossible to sell. If you do buy one, watch as the seller starts to laugh as you drive off, happy in the knowledge that hes finally got rid of that old nail. End of the day its totally up to you! Oh and congrats, if it was my money and i had a little one on the way id go for one of these - or a volvo tank J

It has to be said they aren't that easy a resale... Get one cheap enough then that shouldn;t be a problem. You get decent early ones for much less than a grand now.

Early ones certainly did have the VM motor and head gaskets are apparantly a weak point. Also (as others have suggested) resales are awful, I`ve seen them go round the block for weeks on end and never get a bid. Bit strange to drive in my opinion too, couldn`t really get on with them but each to their own and all that.

The father ran a 4.0 for a while back in 99 (it was a 99 model) and the only thing I can remember is how positively curse word the seats were, how cramped I was (aged 10ish!) in the back and how annonying the rear windows opening about 2mm's.
Still loved the noise (if not the pathetic go)

Used to drive one for my job a couple of years ago - a 98(r) 2.5 TD Sport, Looked good (I thought) not very nippy but not a slug, steering a bit vague, sometimes felt like it might swap ends in the wet (all down to how you drive, and in my case it was a company car - nothing drives quite like a company car) although I never had it in 4WD mode. Overall I liked it and never had any trouble with it, and I reckon if you like the idea of the car enough you will get to like the rest of it.

After careful consideration,we knocked the jeep idea on the head. so today we went down to Portsmouth and bought this- they even gave us £200 more than what we paid for the Rav 4 in PX. RESULT!! It has every toy you can imagine, full leather and only 70,000 miles.Should be able to fit the dog in this b*gger ;D ;D

Yowzers - diseasel i presume?
Also what's the deal with those bullbars? Is it only illegal to get new ones installed which are like that but ok to have them if they were on the vehicle already or what?
